Plainly stated, the Department of State represents the interests of the US government around the globe. The agency operates more than 270 US embassies and consulates in more than 160 countries. State's members represent the US to the UN, NATO (North American Treaty Organization), UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization), and the European Union. The department also issues travel warnings to US citizens, publishes Congressional testimonies, and offers reports on doing business with State and other nations. Its goals include achieving peace and security, creating jobs, helping developing nations, and fostering international cooperation. The Department of State was formed in 1789.
