Loyola University is a Jesuit, Catholic university with a reach that extends far beyond the Windy City. In addition to its three Chicago-area campuses, the university also maintains an undergraduate campus in Italy and a study center in Beijing, China. Loyola University's nearly 16,000 students can choose from about 80 undergraduate, 85 master's, 30 doctoral, and about two dozen graduate-level certificate programs. With about 1,550 full-time staff members, the not-for-profit school has a 14:1 student-teacher ratio. Notable alumni include actor Bob Newhart and writer Sandra Cisneros. Established in 1870 by a group of Jesuit priests, the university turned its medical center into a separate subsidiary in 1995.
