Five Star Quality Care, Inc. (FVE) operates senior living communities, including independent living or congregate care communities, assisted living communities and nursing homes. As of December 31, 2008, FVE operated 210 senior living communities containing 22,264 living units, including 161 primarily independent and assisted living communities with 17,854 living units, and 49 nursing homes containing 4,410 units. Of its 161 primarily independent and assisted living communities, the Company leased 134 communities with 15,679 living units from Senior Housing Properties Trust (Senior Housing), its former parent, and it owned 23 communities with 1,975 living units. In December 2008, FVE acquired seven independent and assisted living communities, with a total of 628 living units, located in North Carolina and South Carolina. On July 1, 2008, the Company acquired three assisted living properties with 259 living units that were operated by NewSeasons from Senior Housing.
