Understanding the climatic changes that have taken place in recent history, and what effect these are having on our environment, is an essential tool in making predictions for the future, and preparing areas at risk for change. This KML, created by the National Snow and Ice Data Center, illustrates these effects in the form of animated image overlays. By showing data taken from the months of July and September from 1979 onwards to show sea ice extents for the Arctic and Antarctic, we can rely on spatial data such as this to inform us of changes taking place. This examples, and others like it allow millions of people worldwide to view instantly what is happening in places that are by nature remote, but by potential impact, nearby and worth exploring. Note: It is likely that you will need to allow the animation to run through once or twice to enable the image overlays to load fully.
