Making our services more secure
Not everyone has good intentions when searching online. Identifying these bad players, so that we can protect our users and our networks, is another way that we use search data. Analyzing aggregate search patterns enables us to better distinguish between legitimate web traffic and malicious traffic generated by hackers or bots that probe for security vulnerabilities. They may be trying to manipulate our search rankings or falsely click on ads so that advertisers get unjustly charged. When trying to distinguish between fraud and legitimate new patterns of behavior, it helps if we have old data to use as a benchmark.
