Tenor Villazon cancels 2009 concerts due to health

PARIS (AFP) — Star Franco-Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon is cancelling scheduled performances until the end of year due to a cyst on his vocal chords, his managers said Wednesday.

"He needs surgery as soon as possible," said a statement from Universal Music Classical Management and Productions, adding that his doctor expected him back on stage "around the end of the year."

Often referred to as the new Placido Domingo, the 37-year-old star suffered from problems with his vocal chords which forced him to rest up for a time in 2007.

Last February he was forced to cancel an appearance at the Paris Opera and subsequently annulled six performances in Donizetti at New York's Metropolitan Opera.
