Fugitive Canadian drug trafficker caught in Mexico

MEXICO CITY — Mexican authorities have detained a Canadian fugitive who had been on conditional release following a drug trafficking conviction, officials said Wednesday.

Mexican police detained Nicholas Lucier in the western state of Nayarit, near the beach resort of Nuevo Vallarta, said a statement from the state attorney general's office.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police were seeking Lucier after he apparently breached the terms of his conditional release under a three-year, seven-month sentence for possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

His criminal history also includes charges of possession of a prohibited weapon, robbery and assault, according to the RCMP.

Mexican authorities said that another Canadian citizen linked to drug trafficking was killed in Nuevo Vallarta, some 530 miles (850 kilometers) from Mexico City, last weekend.
