VANCOUVER, Canada (AFP) — Seven people died and one man survived a plane crash on an island off Canada's rugged west coast, a rescue center spokesman told AFP.
The amphibious Grumman Goose aircraft was carrying eight people when it crashed Sunday into the side of Thormanby Island, a small island 50 kilometers (30 miles) northwest of Vancouver, said Major Mitch Leenders of the government Joint Rescue Coordination Center.
Leenders said the survivor walked about 1.8 kilometers (one mile) from the crash site to the island's shore, where he was found by a Coast Guard vessel.
Local media reported that the aircraft was a commercial plane owned by Pacific Coastal Airlines, and was carrying workers to a hydroelectric project on the remote coast of British Columbia.
