EU puts off reply to US body scanner request

TOLEDO, Spain — EU interior ministers are putting off a reply to a US request for body scanners at European airports until studies into their possible harmful effects on health and privacy are completed.

Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, whose nation holds the rotating EU presidency, said the European Commission is carrying out studies into the devices' effectiveness and their possible impact on health and privacy.

"Once we have these studies on the table we will make a decision," he told a news conference with US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in Toledo, Spain after a meeting of EU interior ministers.
