BISSAU (AFP) — Guinea-Bissau President Joao Bernardo Vieira named Carlos Gomes Junior, leader of the dominant PAIGC party, as the country's new prime minister on Thursday following elections last month.
The 59-year-old, who previously served as premier between April 2004 and September 2005, becomes the fifth prime minister in the space of three years in the impoverished west African country.
"Good governance and a reform of the justice system will be the main priorities of my government," Gomes told AFP.
The new prime minister, whose African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) won a resounding majority in November's parliamentary elections, denied that personal differences with the president which soured his last stint in power would prove a problem once more.
"We are much too concerned with tackling the economic and social situation in our country. The president and myself have only one real concern -- to serve our country and so we must put aside any personal differences."
