Japan's Seiji Ozawa cancels concerts after surgery

PARIS (AFP) — Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa has been forced to cancel three concerts following emergency surgery for a hernia, Paris' Theatre des Champs-Elysees said Friday.

The 73-year-old conductor has cancelled three concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic -- two in Vienna on June 19 and 21, and one in Paris on June 22 -- after "undergoing emergency surgery 48 hours ago for a hernia," the concert hall said in a statement.

"The operation went well but calls for a 10-day rest," it added.

Britain's Daniel Harding will step in to replace Ozawa, who in 2006 was forced to cancel a series of concerts due to health problems.
