ZAGREB (AFP) — Russia's Dinara Safina, the current world number two, will begin training in Croatia from March onwards, the Croatian sport daily Sportske Novosti reported on Friday.
The 22-year-old, and her Croatian coach Zeljko Krajan, have asked the northern town of Varazdin to enter into a partnership over the construction of tennis courts where the Russian can train with Safina putting up the money to finance the costs.
"We've reached an agreement in principle to construct tennis courts that will serve as a base for her training," the mayor of Varazdin, Zlatko Horvat, told the paper.
"It's a huge thing for the development of tennis in Varazdin."
Safina rose to number two in the world rankings after reaching the final of the Australian Open last weekend when she was beaten 6-0, 6-3 by America's Serena Williams.
