NBA's Brand undergoes successful shoulder surgery

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AFP) — Philadelphia 76ers forward Elton Brand underwent successful right shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum on Monday, ending his National Basketball Association season.

Brand missed 16 games after dislocating the shoulder December 17 against Milwaukee, then played in six games before managing only six minutes last week in a 100-99 loss to Boston after which he said he felt pain in the shoulder.

An MRI exam showed the tear, which would have limited Brand's movements and made him ineffective for the remainder of the NBA campaign.

Brand averaged 13.8 points and 8.8 rebounds a game in his first season after signing a five-year deal worth 80 million dollars with the 76ers, who are 25-24 and seventh in the NBA's Eastern Conference.
