SINGAPORE (AFP) — The world's biggest observation wheel will remain shut pending a probe into a fire that led to a breakdown while 173 passengers were suspended mid-air, Singapore police said Thursday.
A fire in the control room of the Singapore Flyer late Tuesday caused the shutdown that left passengers, including tourists, trapped for about six hours.
"There was apparently a fire that caused damage to the Flyer's control system," Singapore police said in a statement.
It said the Flyer would resume operations once its structural and mechanical system had been certified safe by an internationally recognised body.
The power cut was the fourth such incident since the wheel opened earlier this year.
At 165 metres (540 feet), the Singapore Flyer is 30 metres taller than the London Eye.
