Two held over 'planned Nairobi suicide attacks'

NAIROBI — Police in the Kenyan capital Friday said they have arrested two suspects who were allegedly planning suicide attacks, and also seized six explosive vests and other arms and ammunition in an overnight raid.

"These suspects wanted to use these arms to harm innocent Kenyans during Sunday church services," a police officer involved in the raid told AFP.

He said two other suspects still at large were being hunted by police.

Nairobi deputy police chief Moses Nyakwama Ombati said the two suspects detained, both Somali nationals by birth and naturalised Kenyans, were arrested at a house in the Eastleigh area of the city, known as Little Mogadishu.

He said the suicide vests seized were wired up to mobile phones complete with batteries and were therefore ready for use.

Ever since Kenya sent tanks and troops into neighbouring Somalia to fight Ismalist extremists almost one year ago, the country has been hit by a series of grenade attacks, explosions and shootings, sometimes against police targets and sometimes against either bars or Christian religious gatherings.
