South Korea's jobless rate edges downward

SEOUL — South Korea's unemployment rate eased down in July from a month earlier due to an increase in new jobs, especially for the young, official figures showed on Thursday.

The jobless rate was 3.1 percent last month compared to 3.2 percent in June, Statistics Korea said. The seasonally adjusted rate was also at 3.1 percent in July, down from June's 3.2 percent.

The agency said 470,000 new jobs were added in July compared to 365,000 the previous month, and the youth jobless rate fell to 7.3 percent from 7.7 percent in June.
