UN Security Council team in Afghanistan

KABUL (AFP) — A UN Security Council delegation arrived in Kabul Monday to assess Afghanistan's troubled progress towards ending the Taliban-led insurgency and rebuilding after decades of war.

The delegation of UN ambassadors and representatives from 15 countries were to spend three days in Afghanistan meeting with President Hamid Karzai and other key people, a UN statement said.

"Included on their agenda are meetings relating to security, governance, human rights, and economic and social development," it said.

A report to the Security Council in September said the security and humanitarian situations in Afghanistan had markedly deteriorated.
