The global Palestinian population reached 11.22 million at the end of 2011, with more than half living outside the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Authority said on Tuesday.
The survey by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics estimated some 1.6 million Palestinians live in the Gaza Strip and about 2.6 million in the occupied West Bank, including east Jerusalem.
Another 1.37 million reside inside Israel and are the remainder or descendants of Palestinians who did not flee or were not driven out during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war accompanying the foundation of the Jewish state.
Some 4.99 million Palestinians live in Arab countries and around 636,000 are elsewhere, the survey said.
From 1997 to 2010, the total fertility rate in the Palestinian territories declined from 6.0 births to 4.2, with an average of 3.8 births in the West Bank and 4.9 in the Gaza Strip, the report said.
"These rates have been stable for the past few years, with no significant changes," it added.
Israel's population in September 2011 was about 7.8 million, of which 5.8 million were Jews, according to Israeli government figures.
