EU foreign policy chief Solana calls for Gaza ceasefire

LONDON (AFP) — EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana called on Sunday for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, adding that European nations stand ready to contribute international monitors to help keep the peace.

"The ceasefire has to be a ceasefire complied (with) by everybody and be clearly maintained," Solana told the BBC.

"We are ready to cooperate with other members of the international community to see if necessary how we can monitor the ceasefire," he said.

Solana said deploying monitors "can be done, but that cannot be done in 24 hours. And for that we need a ceasefire first."

Thousands of Israeli troops and scores of tanks pushed deep into Gaza on Sunday, moving towards the enclave's capital on a mission to end militant rocket attacks.
