NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul will likely need surgery because of an injury to his knee that will keep him out of the lineup indefinitely.
An medical scan revealed more damage to the knee than the initial diagnosis of a bruise, said New Orleans coach Jeff Bower Monday.
"We're in fact-finding stages right now, gathering as much information as possible for decisions to be made to take the next steps," Bower said. "It is likely there will be a surgical solution for it."
Paul reinjured the knee when he struck the cameraman as he flew out of bounds near the end of a game against the Chicago Bulls on Friday. He first hurt the knee in a National Basketball Association game against Golden State two nights earlier.
Paul was averaging a team-leading 20.4 points and an league-high 11.2 assists per game.
He was the runner-up to the Kobe Bryant for most valuable player in the 2007-08 season.
New Orleans have won 13 of their last 17 games and were tied for eighth spot in the Western Conference.
