Former US President Clinton silent on wife's nomination

HONG KONG (AFP) — Former US President Bill Clinton remained tight-lipped on Tuesday about the nomination of his wife Hillary as secretary of state by president-elect Barack Obama.

Philippines President Gloria Arroyo, who was classmate of the former US President at Georgetown University in Washington, congratulated the couple before she addressed the opening session of a two-day conference hosted by Clinton in Hong Kong.

"I have always been very proud of her and I look forward to our working together so that our very strong relations... will become even stronger," said Arroyo.

China's foreign minister Yang Jiechi echoed Arroyo's congratulatory words during a forum about climate change.

Clinton simply nodded his head following the words about his wife's nomination and chose to speak only about climate change and the global financial crisis.

President Clinton has agreed to publish the names of more than 200,000 donors to his charitable foundation as part of a deal with Obama over his wife's nomination as secretary of state.

He has also said he will not hold further meetings of his Clinton Global Initiative, which organised the Hong Kong event, outside the United States.
