SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) — California-based video game publisher Mastiff said Wednesday it has a deal with organizers of the famed Coney Island hot dog eating contest to cook-up a video game for gluttons.
Mastiff bought a license from Major League Eating (MLE) and expects to market a virtual eating competition title in time for the organization's renowned July Fourth hot dog-downing contest.
MLE oversees a smorgasbord of eating events, the best-known being one in Brooklyn's Coney Island where the person who eats the most hot dogs in 12 minutes, without puking, wins.
Famed competitors include Takeru Kobayashi of Japan and current champion Joey Chestnut of the United States.
"Major League Eaters aren't just elite athletes," says Mastiff chief executive and "head woof" Bill Swartz.
"They are the people who built America. Or at least the competitive eating part of America."
The game will feature animated characters competing in 12 food categories.
Players will be required to show "brilliant on-screen eating" along with a mastery of belches and other "offensive and defensive weapons," according to Mastiff.
"You can be a glutton and not get any of the calories," said Mastiff spokesman Michael Meyers. "It's the best of both worlds."
Players must be skillful enough to avoid emptying their stomaches "in a vividly colorful reversal of fortune."
"We knew this sport would lend itself very well to an interactive format," said George Shea of MLE. "Mastiff has the stomach and the sense of humor to pull this off."
