BEIJING — China said Friday the death toll from torrential downpours that have ravaged southern parts of the country for close to a week rose to 69, as the rain continued to affect millions of people.
Floods and landslides triggered by the summer deluge left a further 44 people missing and had forced nearly half a million out of their homes, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said on its website.
The cost of the disaster, which has affected huge swathes of China's south, had reached 6.5 billion yuan (950 million dollars), it added.
Torrential rain has been pounding wide areas of southern China since Sunday.
