New York mayor backs US World Cup bid

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg Thursday threw his weight behind the bid to bring the World Cup to the United States in either 2018 or 2022.

Bloomberg recorded a one-minute message in support of the bid that was placed on YouTube Thursday.

New York hopes to host matches at the new stadium being built for the National Football League's Giants and Jets in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The facility is to open next year. The current Giants Stadium, where both New York teams play, was used for the 1994 World Cup.

FIFA's 24-man executive committee will decide the hosts of both the 2018 and 2022 events in December 2010.

Australia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Netherlands-Belgium, Russia, and Spain-Portugal have also bid to host either of the World Cups, and Qatar and South Korea bid for 2022 only.

South Africa is hosting next year's World Cup with Brazil staging the 2014 event, and Bloomberg's offering of support came on the eve of the 2010 World Cup draw in Cape Town.
