WASHINGTON (AFP) — Four people were killed and scores more injured Monday in a rush-hour collision between two metro trains in the US capital, Washington's Mayor Adrian Fenty told reporters.
There are "four confirmed fatalities," Fenty said.
"This would be the deadliest accident in the history of our metro train transit system," he added.
One of those killed was the train operator, officials said.
At least 70 people have been treated for injuries and two had "life-threatening" injuries, fire chief Dennis Rubin said.
The crash occurred minutes after 5:00 pm (2100 GMT) in northeast Washington during the city's evening rush hour.
"One train was stopped waiting to get the order to pass because (another) train stopped, the next train came up behind it and for reasons we do not know plowed into the back of the train," Metro general manager John Catoe said.
"The operator of that train is the one that lost their life," he said, adding that an investigation was underway.
