Put your tabs back on top like iGoogle used to be, or put them on the side again. To KEEP tabs on top, first put them there then save THAT iGoogle page as your homepage, bookmark or favorite.
Anyone want to start a "I hate Google sidetabs" page on FB?
Rid us of those side tabs Cheryl Cormier - Nov 26, 2009 - Report this comment
I wish google would get off their hind horse and have an e-mail support system and not leave their customers hanging in the lurch. I run ie 8 on xp and am having no luck. I am getting so frustrated with these dam side tabs as it pushes my columns off the monitor. And I can not get my surname to change on the chat. Google I swear is trying to turn it's customers away to the competitors. Thank you for all your suggestions everyone.
I could get a rid of the stupid iGoogle side tab once I followed Lawrence's suggestion. What a great find, Lawrence!!!
If you use Adblock Plus, try thisLawrence Earl - Nov 23, 2009 - Report this comment
If you use the Adblock Plus extension with Firefox, add this filter to Adblock: google.com#TD(class=leftborder) Worked for me. Killed the left sidebar.

I too have had it with Google. Tabs on the left are just totally unacceptable and I cannot understand why Google keeps forcing them on us. I for one will not stand for it anymore. I found a page which describes other options: http://webtrends.about.com/od/personalizedstartpages/tp/Top-Personalized-Start-Pages.htm. I'm experimenting with NetVibes right now and really like it. Google IS replaceable.
I too enjoyed your plug-in Mandy, until Google broke it :( In the mean time I found this other plug in which (for now) reclaims the wasted space the left tabs use. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10113
No longer works on Firefox too.Susan Winter - Nov 20, 2009 - Report this comment
I loved this add-on as I always want my tabs on top (why can't Google just let us choose for ourselves). Now it doesn't work any longer anywhere.
Why have google messed about with the tabs!! Please can anybody help, Is there a google help desk? Taking the tabs away from the top just makes it like any other favourites page. Please change back to tabs at top Google!
I found this add-on on the Google forum: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10113 It hides the sidebar by putting it up top as a drop down. The only draw back I can see is that it hides the "Change Themes" and "Add Stuff" links in the themed section.
Haha. No offense intended folks, but I'm amused, reading all these comments. Anyone tried writing directly to Google?
Irritating Home and Chat tabserika conn - Nov 19, 2009 - Report this comment
I, too, chose iGoogle because I could have a nice clean start page with just my personal preferences. Suddenly, this crap shows up. What is that? I think Google has grown too big and is turning into a monster. Too bad. They used to be so cool.
God bless Mandy for making this fix, which has worked for me for months, now. Until yesterday, which seems to be the case for everyone. I also will look for an alternative, now. I just use the basic white page at work, where the tabs on top option never did work on my windoze machine, but I like some bells and whistles on my Mac at home. Too bad, Google, you really shot yourself in the foot on this one. Dumbasses.
Not perfect but try this Firefox add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=IGOOGLE+TABS&cat=all&advancedsearch=1&as=1&appid=1&lver=3.5&atype=0&pp=20&pid=5&sort=&lup= At least I got my 3 columns back, no left side bar and the chat box from Hell has been minimized. No tabs appear at the top but you can click a drop down menu on the top left and get to other places on your homepage.
Nothing works & this sucks. One of the applets cause the page to reload like crazy. Do they know what QA is? Time to check and see if there's an iBing out there ;-)
I've been using the workaround hl=all until today, which has now stopped working. I was trying to be patient as Google came to their senses, but I'm done. I'll find another home page. Yeah, it's free, but something seemingly so minute in the big 'G' picture seems to really get them torked enough to actively hold their ground on this issue. They win.
Apparently, Google is working to thin out the herd, alienating customers by forcing the "Tabs on Side" layout. I have never even considered Bing, but I'm going to check it out RIGHT NOW. Way to chase away loyal customers, Google.
AGGGHH!!! Why oh why the Side Tabs???Yeah - Nov 19, 2009 - Report this comment
I thought I was going nuts when I relised the dreaded side tabs had returned to my homepage. Reading posts here I learn that it was Google who forced teh change (again). It just defys all comprehension why Google want to impose these side tabs on us. It really is quite amazing reading all these posts. The response from disgrunteled users is both firm and immediate. Glad I am not nthe only one. Has there ever been any offical word from Google about WHY they want to force this on us? Google......please don't impose this side tab maddness on us.
Can anyone help me please, the tabs on my home page are now coming up on the left. I've got the 'put tabs on the top' gadget, but it is not working and they remain on the left. Really annoying, as I find them much easier to use on the top. Thank you
I agree with all of these comments. This setup is pathetic and with no choice or options, it's like a dictatorship "you'll take what we give you". Is this the sort of garbage business practices forced on Android based phones users too? Google get with the program and stop being so ignorant.
Give us back our tabs on top!!!!!!Alexander Verbraeck - Nov 18, 2009 - Report this comment
This is the 2nd or 3rd time that Google just changed the look-and-feel of the classic theme. No explanation, no nothing. This is rude behavior I wouldn't expect from Google. Maybe getting big means getting arrogant...

It is unbelievable that Google would not allow this option. What's the point Google? Now Google seems to be actually thwarting efforts on workarounds.
