It would be great if institutions like the World Bank would provide a data source URL for this gadget. They do it for GeoMap, why not for MotionChart?

Concur with Steve Barnett. Would be great for spatial data. Need to be able to add a variety of map overlays to provide the necessary background.

You can't export with goodle motion charts. There is the Trend Compass software that does it. Download the Trial version : http://epicsyst.com/trendcompass/FreeVersion/TrendCompassv1.2_DotNet.zip
How do you export the motion chart that you made to another software such as power point?

yes of course: 1. http://code.google.com/p/mc-goog-visualization/wiki/UserDocumentation 2. or you can dinamically generate cells of table using PHP (or ASP...)

Can I display data from a mysql database using motion chart?
I added this widget but can't set it up as it's asking for a URL... anybody know what that is?

Trend Compass got this feature to record your voice while the chart is displayed. Then you can export that as AVI. Nice feature.
Extraordinary code (not so good documentation) - Anonymous - Apr 13, 2009 - Report this comment
We love this code, the charts are amazing, imagine the time to develope something similar... no way... But trying to configure a chart was more a trial and error job, searching what all the params means and which was the meaning of variables and value options. Had to configure the graph using the advanced tab to know witch are the accepted values for each param. Also had to dig into all the examples code to undestand the whole features.
Use of Maps in Motion ChartSteve Barnett - Mar 24, 2009 - Report this comment
The original GapMinder SW had Mapping Capability, so it must be in there somewhere Google folks, and yes it certainly would be handy
Very nice and useful gadget. A missing feature is the possibility of setting a fixed scale on x and y axis... For instanace if I want to plot percentages, I would like to have both axis go from 0 to 1 without autoscaling.
After having watched Hans Rosling's presentation I would like to breakdown my bubbles into subgroups, as he does with income quantiles for each country. Can anyone tell me how he does this?
I made a simply chart on my computer, I can watch it by clicking my motion chart button, how exciting! But how can I share it with others who may not have google account yet? Can I download the chart to somewhere? Moreover, how can I insert the chart to my ppt presentation? Please advise, thank you!
Is there a way to get the slider on the motion chart to show numeric values instead of dates? For example, the "Date" column in my spreadsheet reads [0 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5 ...] and I want it to appear that way on the motion chart slide also. But it always appears as [1900 1902 1902 ...].
This is a nice implementation of the software, I look forward to it becoming more than just a Google gadget available on iGoogle. For people struggling to use it, just create a spreadsheet like this one which I've published in Google Docs (it just contains random data from Excel, nothing interesting!): http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p6Xfg0yk3f0Zr2VPRJgeEVg Note that if you're going to put it in Google Docs then once you've uploaded it you will have to publish it as a web page otherwise the gadget won't be able to access it (hopefully Google will fix that so at least you can see it yourself if it's in your Google Docs) You should be able to see the gadget working if you just copy my spreadsheet URL from above into the gadget URL setting. Note the column headings "bubble name" and "time" have to be there, and your first row of data has to be the column names. It is possible that "time" has to be four digit years - I haven't experimented with it though. The other variables are entirely up to you and depend on what you want to plot. As well as the required "bubble name" and "time" I have created the variables "X", "Y", "size" and "group". The gadget seems like it's clever enough to know that I want X on the x-axis, Y on the Y-axis, size to be used for the size of the bubbles and group to be used for the color of the bubbles. However once you're in the chart you can use the drop-down menus to use different variables for different things. Hope that helps! I highly recommend watching Hans Rosling's TED presentations, as well as showing the power of this software and graphical representation of data, the socio-economic issues he is presenting are very interesting. You can find them on ted.com or through his own website www.gapminder.org
JUST LIKE "Nicholas Smith" HAS WRITTEN, I DO EVERYTHING RIGHT/STRAIGHTFORWARD AND I KEEP GETTING A THIN HORIZONTAL LINE!! help me someone!!! please!! ANYONE!!!
I have created four columns in my google spreadsheet, including 1) bubble name column 2) time displayed as Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 3) numerical value 4) another numerical value. I highlight the whole chart including the column names and insert the Motion Chart Gadget. I then give it a name, and leave the 'no of header rows' to auto. I click 'Apply' and all I keep getting is a thin horizontal line a mm in width. Can anything else? Nicholas
The documentation available in Help for Google Spreadsheets is not stellar, but may be helpful. Please check out the following link... http://documents.google.com/support/spreadsheets/bin/answer.py?answer=91610
