WiFi Passport testing period is ending.
Vouchers may not be redeemed for WiFi Passport time after May 15 2014.

What is WiFi Passport?

WiFi Passport powered by Google is a fast, easy and affordable way to get online when you’re out and about in Jakarta.

WiFi Passport is currently in testing.

A limited number of free WiFi Passport vouchers are available by invitation and at official WiFi Passport events.

To use it, just get a voucher, sign into your Google account, enter the code then head to the nearest participating hotspot. It’s exclusively available for Android users and works across official Android smartphones and tablets running version 2.2 (Froyo) and above.

Why should I use WiFi Passport?

It’s way quicker than congested 3G connections, and there’s no need to keep entering passwords or re-registering on hard-to-use websites either.

Instead, you just go to a participating hotspot, open the WiFi Passport app, add credit using your top-up voucher code and you’re connected. Then you can stream music, watch movies, and share stuff with friends just like at home.

Plus all of this:

  • One-time log-in After connecting, you’ll be online for the next 24 hours so long as you’re in a hotspot.
  • Stacks of data You can use up to 3GB of video, music, photos and other content in a single day – or 7GB over seven days and 10GB over 30 days.
  • Wide coverage With hotspots around the city, you can connect with buddies, watch the big matches, or stay in touch with the office all day long.

Okay, ready?

It’s easy to get started and only takes a minute or so.

Here’s how:

  1. Install the WiFi Passport app on your device. To do that, get online, head to the Google Play app, search for “WiFi Passport” then select it and press Install.
When it’s downloaded, stay online and tap to launch. After reviewing the terms of service, finish the setup by selecting your Google account.
Don’t have a Google account? No problem, you can create one here.
Android device not configured with your Google Account? Visit Google Play Support to learn how to do that.
  2. Next, get a WiFi Passport voucher from an official WiFi Passport event or any of these stores.
  3. Before activating your voucher you’ll need to connect to the internet, open the WiFi Passport app and add time to your account by tapping in the code. You can do this through your mobile data plan, a public hotspot or at any participating WiFi Passport hotspots.

When the time’s up, just go to a WiFi Passport hotspot and click the connect button to start another 24-hour session.

Your questions answered

Q: How much does WiFi Passport cost?

WiFi Passport is still being tested. There will be a few promotional vouchers being distributed at official WiFi Passport events. You can also buy vouchers at MOGPLAY stores all over Jakarta. See above, How much does it cost? for more information.

Q: What does it mean that you're testing the app?

This is a new thing for everyone involved: for the ISPs, for the companies handling the vouchers and for us. For now, the WiFi coverage is limited and we're expecting technical issues to crop up as more and more people use it in more and more places. We'll be handing out vouchers in the coming months so that people can help us test it and give feedback. There are ways you can pay to use WiFi Passport but we recommend that only those who have promotional vouchers download and use the WiFi Passport app. Please note that Google does not guarantee WiFi connectivity or service.

Q: How long do vouchers last?

Vouchers give you a set number of individual sessions, each lasting 24 hours.
Whenever you connect, you’ll be online for the next 24 hours so long as you’re within range of a participating hotspot. Each session will expire in 24 hours, whether you’re online or not. When a session runs out, just head to a WiFi Passport hotspot and click the connect button to start a new one. This new session then lasts another 24 hours.

Q: What’s the maximum number of WiFi Passport days I can add to my account?

See above, How much does it cost? for more information.

Q: Where are the WiFi Passport hotspots in Jakarta?

You can see a map of them here, or in the app under Settings: WiFi Passport hotspots

Q: How much money does Google make off WiFi Passport?

Google is not charging a fee for downloading the app and does not collect any other fees. This is part of our effort to find new approaches to make the Internet more affordable and faster in Indonesia. The app is designed for local ISPs to leverage existing infrastructure in a new way and give users who haven’t got wireless data plans, an affordable way to use Android phones across the city.

Q: Do you plan to expand the number of Wi-Fi providers in Jakarta?

The app is designed so that any licensed ISP or Wi-Fi provider can join.
