2009 Workshop for Women Engineers Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply?

The application is simple. First, update your resume to highlight your academic and leadership accomplishments, and any relevant work experience. Then visit http://google.eresources.com to fill out your application and submit relevant documents.

When is the deadline to apply?

Please submit your application no later than Friday, December 5, 2008.

Do I need to send a copy of my transcripts to apply?

No. An official or unofficial copy of your transcript will only be required if you are selected to attend the workshop. Please do not send transcripts with your initial application.

Do I need to mail recommendation letters with my application?

No. Recommendation letters are not required to apply for the 2009 Google Workshop for Women Engineers. Please do not send us recommendation letters.

What should I include on my resume?

Be sure to include your university, major, GPA, and graduation year, as well as any academic honors or awards you have received. Your resume should also include your leadership on and off campus, community involvement, and work experience. Projects you completed through internships of classes should also be included. Let us know what makes you unique.

I am graduating in 2009. Can I still apply?

Yes. Women pursuing a computer science degree in any year of study at the Masters and PhD levels are encouraged to apply.

I am a current Bachelor’s student. Can I still apply?

No. The focus for the 2009 GWWE is research and therefore we are limiting attendance to graduate students only. Please check back next year as the focus changes annually.

Can international students apply for the scholarship?

Yes. If you are currently studying at a university in the United States or Canada and meet our eligibility criteria, you can apply regardless of your citizenship.

I am not a Computer Science Engineering major. Can I apply?

The Google Workshop for Women Engineers is dedicated to rewarding students who are studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related technical field majors.

What is a closely related technical field?

A closely related technical field could include Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate significant coursework, projects, or internship experience with computer science, regardless of major.

I have attended a Google Workshop for Women Engineers in the past. Can I apply and attend again?

No. Students who attended either of the previous Google Workshops for Women Engineers are not eligible to attend again. However, you may apply for the 2009 Anita Borg Scholarship.

I was selected as a finalist/Anita Borg Scholar last year (or a previous year). Can I apply to attend the workshop?

No. Previous Anita Borg Scholars and Finalists are not eligible to attend the Workshop for Women Engineers.

I am also applying for the 2009 Anita Borg Scholarship. Can I do both?

Absolutely! Please feel free to apply to both the 2009 Anita Borg Scholarship and the 2009 Google Workshop for Women Engineers.

Can men apply?

No. This workshop is dedicated to recognizing the accomplishments of women in technology. We hope to expand our workshop programs in the future. Please feel free to visit www.google.com/students to learn more about Google’s global programs for students.

How will I know if my application has been received?

You will receive an automatic email response when you submit your documents.

If I am selected, how will my travel accommodations be made?

After you are selected and confirm your attendance, Google will send you information about how to book your round trip flights to and from the San Jose International Airport. Google will book and confirm 3-nights hotel accommodations for you. All required information will be sent to you via email after you RSVP.

What will Google pay for?

Google will cover the costs of 3-nights hotel accommodation, including room fees and taxes. You will be responsible for any incidental costs charged to your room. Google will also pay for your round trip flight from your local university airport to San Jose International Airport. Meals will be provided at the workshop.

How do I apply for an internship?

Applications and interviews for internships or full time employment opportunities are separate from the workshop application process. For more information, please visit www.google.com/students.
