Did Birds Evolve From Dinosaurs?

While all Darwinists believe in avian evolution, not all Darwinists believe birds evolved from dinosaurs. The article "In quest of the origin of birds" in the September '97 issue of BioScience highlights the two competing schools of thought among Darwinists: 1) birds evolved from jumping dinosaurs, or 2) birds evolved from gliding reptiles.

Apparently, Archaeopteryx doesn't appear to be much help to either view:

The theropod-to-bird school believe birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs which developed feathers for insulation, and later developed flight.

The thecodont-to-bird school find this ridiculuous. They say it's "biophysically impossible" to evolve flight from the "ground up" involving theropods, and propose instead some thecodonts glided through trees, and later developed flight.

The recent article "The Origin of Birds and Their Flight" by Kevin Padian and Luis M. Chiappe (Scientific American, February 1998, pp. 38-47) features an illustration of the fossil bird Confuciusornis; the caption above the illustration declares as fact:"Both a bird and a dinosaur" < http://www.sciam.com/1998/0298issue/0298currentissue.html> On page 5 of the same issue, under the heading, "About the Cover", Confuciusornis is described as "a primitive bird".

Padian and Chiappe conclude: "In fact, living birds are nothing less than small, feathered, short-tailed theropod dinosaurs." (p. 47)

"Scales are flat horny plates; feathers are very complex in structure, consisting of a central shaft from which radiate barbs and barbules. Barbules are equipped with tiny hooks which lock onto the barbs and bind the feather surface into a flat, strong, flexible vane. Feathers and scales arise from different layers of the skin. Futhermore, the development of the feather is extremely complex, and fundamentally different from that of a scale. Feathers, as do hairs but unlike scales, develop from follicles. A hair, however, is a much simpler structure than a feather. The developing feather is protected by a horny sheath and forms around a bloody, conical, inductive dermal core. Not only is the developing feather sandwiched between the sheath and dermal core, it is complex in structure. Development of the cells that will become the mature feather involves complex processes. Cells migrate and split apart in highly specific patterns to form the complex arrangement of barbs and barbules." ("Evolution: The Fossils Still Say No!", pp. 135-136) Well-known creationist Duane Gish, who spent 18 years in biochemical research (Cornell University Medical College; Virus Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley; The Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, Michigan) says no evolutionist can come even close to providing an evolutionary explanation of how feathers could have evolved from scales:

A Christian can experience great joy knowing God exists and His word is true by examining the evidence around him. If you compare everything that man builds to God's creation, you see an incredible difference. As you observe anything man makes under a microscope, the closer you examine it, the more flaws you find. In comparison, God's handiwork in nature is orderly, and that order increases in detail and beauty the closer you examine it.

Reasons For Studying Creation

There are three reasons why we should study God's creation:

1. Worship. Scientific discoveries verify God's existence. As we examine nature, we give glory to God in His creation.

2. Evangelism. Evolution is a stumbling block that prevents people from receiving Christ. If we can remove that stumbling block, people become more open to the message of salvation.

3. Building up of the Saints. The more we learn about God's creation, it adds to the support we have for our faith in Jesus Christ. The demonstration of the power of God through the Holy Spirit provides primary evidence. Scientific facts verifying the word of God adds to that faith, and provides a balance between the mind and the spirit.

Many believers say "I don't really need to have scientific evidence in order for me to have faith in Jesus Christ." I would definitely agree with them. Our faith should not rest in the "wisdom" of men, but in the power of God. If we use that as an excuse, though, what impact can we make when an unbeliever comes to us with questions about the Bible, and asks why it conflicts with scientific theories? We need to have a ready answer for those who challenge our faith, so that they also have the chance to believe.

The conflict between science and the Bible needs resolution. The Bible does not conflict with true science, it opposes a belief system that wrongly calls itself science. Scripture describes this philosophy as "science falsely so called." It deserves challenge and exposure because evolutionary theories not only conflict with the Bible, but with scientific laws as well.

Now, where does the conflict take place? Creationists do not challenge micro-evolution, which describes the science of genetics and changes of characteristics within species. The contention is with mega-evolution, which is the idea of evolution from molecules to man. Mega-evolution is offensive because it is an affront to God as creator, and defies scientific reason. When we challenge evolution in this book, we are contesting mega-evolution.

If we doubt Genesis, then we undermine the account of the fall of man in the garden of Eden and the need for salvation. Genesis is foundational to our faith. Can we select what we want to believe in the scriptures and throw out the stuff we don't like or can't understand? Of course we cannot. Yet, that's what many Christians do.

There is tremendous pressure placed on believers to accept evolution as the only acceptable scientific choice. In most classrooms, we see evolution taught exclusively with no chance at all for the other side of the story to be presented. Because of that, most Christians are ill­informed on the subject, or divided. Often, they simply avoid the subject entirely. Because Christians neglect studying basic science, we find believers teaching evolution. This is happening even in Christian schools because of the lack of qualified science instructors aware of the scientific evidence for creation.

We need to lay hold of the strongholds that Satan has taken from Christianity. Before 1850, Christians dominated the arts and sciences, but when theologians compromised with evolution instead of challenging it, Christians gave up these subjects to atheism and unbelief. If we examine the history of the discipline of science, we find that many early scientists were believers in special creation. Pasteur, Mendel, and Faraday are examples. We should examine the lives of these early scientists and their lives to recapture their spirit and curiosity about God's creation.

Evolution has never been more vulnerable as it is today. The theory is under attack not only from creationists, but even within the ranks of unbelievers. Darwin's theory remains held together only by gossamer threads of guesswork. The facts of science, when exposed testify against it.

Some people say, "the existence of God cannot be proven." The Bible states:

"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities­­his eternal power and divine nature­­have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."

With that statement, God is saying that we have no excuse for unbelief, since He has revealed himself in His creation. God has provided all the evidence we need to believe and trust in Him through all He has created. Through His creation, He declares to the world, "I have made my existence blatantly obvious! If you miss salvation, it is not because I did not provide enough evidence. In fact, you have no excuse for your unbelief."

We must assess the evidence we have, and decide what we need for "proof" that God exists. God is under no obligation to prove Himself. There is plenty of evidence available at our hands that demonstrates the creative power of God. The key is to give the credit where credit is due, and worship Him for it.

fail to understand why people do not thirst after God and desire to know Him. The benefits of knowing our Creator are tremendous. What better purpose is there in life than learning and following God's plan? The scientific facts compel me to worship Him, and by experiment I test my faith by applying His Word to my life.

Evolutionists often accuse Creationists of being biased because of our Christian faith. We're biased only with the same bias we have toward steak and potatoes with hot apple pie a la mode. We have sampled it and found it to be good!

Many have discovered their Christian faith by examining their surroundings, coming to the conclusion that this world around them cannot be just an accident, but God created it. I discovered this when I tried to combine amino acids together to form proteins. The sheer amount of work involved to do this convinced me of that. Proteins just do not naturally form by themselves: it takes a creative process!

The evolutionist has a "religious" faith at stake in this issue. His bias comes from his not wanting to deal with a personal God. If God has a personal plan for everyone, that means that each person has to choose God's plan over his own plan.

Of course, man has always thought he has a better plan. Part of the original sin of Adam was choosing his way apart from God. This is the source of spiritual pride: that a man's works can somehow buy the favor of God. Instead, we must choose to understand God's plan the best we can and follow it. If we make our own plans, we never experience God's best. What a terrible waste that is. But, that's the futile investment many scientists make! Evolutionists get grants for studying dinosaurs and ape-men. They write papers and do years of research propping up their theories. So, they naturally don't want creationism taught in the schools. Choosing a creationist point of view is a humbling experience. It strips all pretense of self-achievement away, exposing man for what he really is in the sight of God.

The theory of evolution is a natural result of man's desire to be independent of God. If we assume that God is creator, we have to acknowledge His lordship. A world-view based upon evolution provides a means of side-stepping the issue of admitting that Jesus is Lord. I intend to provide enough evidence in this book to get people to face this issue and deal with it.

One irritating dilemma that results from undertaking a study of God's creation is that we'll never finish the project. It seems that if we answer one question, six more pop up in its place. But, we can be content to live with a world view with open questions: that's when faith has a chance to work. Thank God our salvation is not dependent upon how well we have God figured out.

It's not my goal to figure out God. My objective is to expose the basic assumptions, tactics, and deceit behind the one who would rob us of our faith in Him. I do not fault evolutionists for their unbelief. My contention is not with them, but with the deceiver who blinds them. I invite you to join me in spiritual warfare against the father of all lies, who is Satan. That is the true nature of the revolution against evolution.

Avoiding Sectarianism

It is unfortunate that some people involved in the Creation-Evolution issue make their particular theory a point of division. Though the argument for a young earth creation model is very strong, I do not believe there is enough evidence scripturally or scientifically to be dogmatic about it. Even if there was, our attitude should be that of reconciling our brothers to the truth, not cutting them off fellowship.

God is not going to check our records to see if we believe the young earth theory, gap theory, day-age theory, or big bang theory before He lets us into heaven. It is possible to be wrong in our world view, and yet be right with the Lord in our heart. The reverse is also true; we can be totally correct in our thinking and still have no relationship with God. Some church people tack on the belief in a certain version of a theory as a prerequisite before they will fellowship with you. What a mistake! The purpose of the church is to draw people to Christ, not exclude them. All people are at different levels of faith, and we must make allowances for that.

We must not lose sight of the real value of studying God's creation: to find truth, to encourage others and to receive encouragement. Creation science is a useful tool when it removes stumbling blocks to faith. But we never need to defend God, He can take care of Himself. We need not defend His word, the Bible: it speaks for itself. Instead we offer to people a model of origins that makes it easier for faith to increase.

Remember: God is tenderhearted toward the evolutionist, as He is toward any person who is apart from him or bound. A judgmental attitude causes far more damage than wrong thinking. Our job is to reveal facts about creation that will stir up faith in God and cause liberty. Our attitude must be as one beggar telling another where to find bread. For the evolutionist and those whose world view differs from ours, we must offer a win-win proposition: personal acceptance and an offer to explore the facts to find the truth.

Beware of a mixed menu as offered by the cults: Creationism and the Watchtower; Creationism and British Israelism; Creationism and Mormonism; and even Creationism and New Age. This is a devilish trap that gets people to reject the truth with the error, or accept the error with the truth. Even worse, though, is Creationism and a bad attitude or lifestyle. In that case, people err in the spirit, though the reasoning may be sound and the doctrine Biblical.

Avoiding Compromise

As we show love toward those who disagree with us, we must continue to be bold in exposing the truth about God's creation, avoidingcompromise. When God makes a statement in the Bible, He says, "Thus saith the Lord," not "This may be my opinion, but. . ." Nevertheless, many people adopt a relativistic perspective of the world, with no foundation for their faith.

Belief in evolution destroys a person's reason for faith in the Bible and ultimately in Jesus Christ. When presented with the theories of evolution, a student faces three choices: accept the theory of evolution and reject the Bible and Christ, reject the theory of evolution and accept the Bible as truth, or accept the theory of evolution, taking a giant "leap of faith" and believe the Bible in his spirit, though he doesn't really believe it intellectually.

Many Christians find themselves floundering in the last state. They may be saved by grace in Jesus Christ, but they drift aimlessly like a boat without a rudder or anchor, never deciding what is truth because they doubt the foundation for truth, Genesis. They believe, yes, but when you ask them why, they cannot tell you. This Genesis foundation is important, because without it we're only expressing opinions. If that is the basis for our faith, what would make our opinion any different from anyone else? That is the source of the "do your own thing" philosophy. Everyone is expressing opinions, and not looking to the Word of God as an authority. In this book, I provide solid reasons why I believe the Biblical account of creation over the theory of evolution. I invite you to test them for yourself.

History and Accomplishments to Date

The Foundation for Conscious Evolution (FCE) has for its first ten years served the research, writing, and speaking opportunities of its co-founder, Barbara Marx Hubbard, supported by major financial gifts from Laurance S. Rockefeller, Louis Marx, and other private donors, as well as the general public.

1992 – 1999
Barbara Marx Hubbard & Sidney Lanier found the FCE to help create public awareness of the importance of the new field of Conscious Evolution, conduct research in the field, and develop the Peace Room concept further.

• Barbara gave 80 keynote speeches, 75 print & media interviews

• Wrote 3 books, making a total of 5 books to date.

• Co-founded several organizations including Women of Vision in Action, Foundation for the Future, and Association for Global New Thought.

Since relocating to Santa Barbara, California in June of 1999, FCE has undertaken major growth in the breadth and depth of its activities geared towards more effectively grounding, communicating, and applying the principles and practices of cocreative, self and social conscious evolution.

From 1999 to-date

Major Accomplishments in fulfillment of our vision and mission include:

• Initiated The first version of the Center for Conscious Evolution website as a global outreach vehicle and cocreative resource for the emerging community of pioneering souls. Now called EVOLVE.

• Created the Gateway to Conscious Evolution on-line course; field-tested with over 800 people. Gateway groups now forming throughout the world. Gateway offers a Developmental Path for Self and Social Conscious Evolution. Gateway is now available online in the Living School.

• Initiated the on-line Peace Room framework and process, engaging Evolutionary Colleagues and identifying Innovations.

• Created and aired weekly Internet-radio program, Live from the Peace Room, 5 PM PST on Wednesdays, in partnership with Wisdom Radio. 55 live broadcasts to date; also being archived and used in Gateway program.

• Began a community development experiment in Santa Barbara with 200 volunteer participants. The community is exploring the question “What would happen if this community were to realize its potential for Conscious Evolution?” Entering into the third year the community is growing & self-sustaining. It is initiating many actions for positive change and is in the process of developing a local Peace Room. Other communities in the U.S. and Canada are also initiating similar explorations based upon our work.

• Commenced discussions with influential producers for a television special on the theme of Conscious Evolution.

• Began development of Graduate and Masters programs in Conscious Evolution and Evolutionary Leadership, in partnership with Emerson Institute.

• Published Emergence: The Shift from Ego to Essence, Hampton Roads Publishing.

• Inaugurated Conscious Evolution Fellowship program with first adult and student fellows.

• Completed first Strategic Plan and began fund raising to support our long-term initiatives. In the first two years we have raised almost 1 million dollars in support of our Vision and Plan.

• Developed Gateway marketing partnership agreements with 5 national organizations.

• Began development of a Gateway Guides Program to provide the means for grass roots marketing and support for the Gateway Course worldwide. 30 guides are trained in the initial Program.

• Began the process of creating and publishing The Journal of Conscious Evolution. BMH has completed the lead “scholarly article," Conscious Evolution: The Next Stage of Human Development.

• Launched EVOLVE, a Global Community Center for Conscious Evolution.

Noted author, futurist, speaker and social architect. She is the co-founder of the Foundation for Conscious Evolution and a founding board member of the World Future Society. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College cum laude with a B.A. in Political Science and studied at L’Ecole des Sciences Politique and the Sorbonne. She was awarded the first Doctor of Conscious Evolution degree from Emerson Theological Institute.

BILL UREDA, Secretary/Treasurer
Bill Ureda is a business entrepreneur specializing in the exploration and implementation of new forms of business organization. Originally trained as a CPA, he has worked as CFO for Louis Allen Associates, Werner Erhard & Associates,and Naturemade Vitamins as well as creating two successful businesses, Creative Ventures, Inc. (a co-op retail gift chain) and Earth Tel (a company dedicated to fully funding community services). A graduate of UCLA, he lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Madeleine.

BARBARA FIELDS BERNSTEIN, Director
Currently serves as Executive Director of the Association for Global New Thought and Co-Director of Synthesis Dialogues with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. She was the Program Director for the 1993 Parliament of the World’s Religions and Projects Director for Gandhi-King: A Season for Non-violence.

WILLIAM GRAY, Director
Bill Gray, an entrepreneur residing in Boulder, Colorado, has spent his entire business life in investment real estate, during which time he has bought, managed, and sold over a half billion dollars in shopping centers, office buildings, and apartments across the U.S. He was an owner of Huskin & Co., a firm that was a pioneer in real estate syndication. He was also a partner in Capital Asset Management, which owned and managed over 20,000 apartments, plus a number of shopping centers and office buildings. He is currently an owner of Travent International, the second largest bike touring company in the world; with luxury tours throughout Europe and the eastern United States. Mr. Gray attended the university of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

SANDRA HAY, Director
Producer & Director Sandra Hay arrived in the world of film making from a completely different creative arena, having forged a successful career for herself as an internationally renowned dancer and choreographer. In 1983 Sandra made the transition to film and video when she partnered with Alan Kozlowski, ultimately forming Pacific Ocean Post (P.O.P), the leading post-production facility in Los Angeles, and Mountain Drive, headed by Sandra. She currently has four television series in various stages of production, including a recently completed Disney/ABC pilot, and has also completed filming the concert tour of Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown, Bruce Hornsby, and Shawn Colvin.

Conscious Evolution is a new worldview that is now emerging rapidly and garnering worldwide interest and support. It acknowledges that humankind has attained unprecedented powers to affect, control and change the evolution of life on Earth.

In simple terms, Conscious Evolution means that we must improve our ability to use our powers ethically and effectively (consciously) to achieve a positive future (evolve).

Conscious Evolution is a new social/scientific/spiritual meta-discipline. This worldview has progressed from Einstein's early admonitions that humankind cannot solve our problems from the same place of consciousness in which we created them, through noted scientists and philosophers such as Julian Huxley, Teilhard de Chardin, Sri Aurobindo, Abraham H. Maslow, Jonas Salk, to today's social scientists such as Bela H. Banathy, Hazel Henderson, Riane Eisler, Ervin Laszlo, Jean Houston, Duane Elgin, Edgar Mitchell, Ken Wilber, Peter Russell, Elisabet Sahtouris, Don Beck and many others who are building frameworks for practical application in health, governance, education, management, environment, science, the arts and media.

We are the Generation with the Choice

We live in an unprecedented time in the evolutionary history on planet Earth. The human species has gained powers great enough to destroy our world, or to co-create a vastly better future for all Earth life. Through science and technology, we are probing into the invisible processes of creation—the atom, the gene, the brain. We are learning to place human intent into matter. We are participating in the evolution of evolution from unconscious to conscious choice, from natural selection to selection according to human purpose.

Those of us alive today are the first generation born with the choice of learning conscious, ethical evolution, or suffering devolution and the destruction of our life-support systems with unimaginably more tragedy than the world has yet experienced.

We do not have much time. Within the next 30 to 50 years, we must change our fundamental behavior to be more in alignment with our natural systems and our visions of a positive future. Never before has the human species had to change this quickly in order to survive.

We are the generation of the gap between “here”—a highly technological, over-populating, polluting, brilliant species on the brink of social and environmental chaos, and “there”—a compassionate, spiritually awakened humanity, capable of transcending the limits of our past human existence and moving toward the unknown. This “unknown” has been surfacing in human imagination for thousands of years as a species-wide yearning for—and intuition of— a higher state of being. “Cosmic consciousness, species immortality and universal life,” in the words of astrophysicist Eric Chaisson.

Evolve HQ is bustling right now, as 20 artists and designers are planning and creating the biggest and funnest Awareness Village yet.

Veterans know that Evolve’s Awareness Village is where people come to learn new things, connect with old buddies, meet new friends, and generally frolic about with artisans, musicians, and other fun and exciting folks.

Some of this year’s amazing new Village elements are funky wicker sculptures, enhanced workshop spaces, an improved Kids Zone with lots of performances, as well as puppets and wild circus theatrics. The Village will be nestled among three traditionally-crafted giant Yurts, and 1 huge Teepee, all courtesy of the kind people at Little Foot Yurts. If you’ve never seen a Yurt before - www.lfy.ca - you’ll be amazed.

Since it was so popular at previous festivals, we’re planning the return of Morning Yoga, belly dancing instruction, and reiki healing. And don’t forget to try out some fire spinning as the sun goes down. Beginners wanted!

Special Announcement: We’ve just confirmed that Melissa from the Wassabi Collective will be giving a drum workshop on Saturday afternoon. Many other special artists are now stepping forward with their own workshop ideas. It’s gonna be a blast.

Trying to be the greenest festival in Canada is always our goal. This year, we’ll be powering more festival equipment with alternative fuels including Bio-Diesel, Veggie Oil, Solar power, and Wind power, as well as deploying an extensive recycling, composting and venue cleanup program.

It’s also true that EVOLVE pays a little more to have all our print marketing, including tix, flyers, and posters, printed on 100% post consumer recycled paper with soy-based inks. We believe that it’s very important and that all the little things add up to make this event a great demonstration that green living is accessible and fun.

Why aren't we evolving?

In biology, evolution is the measurable change in the heritable traits (allele frequency) of a population over successive generations. Evolution is ultimately the source of the vast diversity of the biological world. Over time, it may result in the origin of new species (speciation).

Contemporary species are related to each other through common descent, products of evolution and speciation over billions of years. The phylogenetic tree on the right represents these relationships for the three major domains of life.

The modern understanding of evolution is based on the theory of natural selection, which was first set out in a joint 1858 paper by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace and popularized in Darwin's 1859 book The Origin of Species.

Natural selection is the process by which individual organisms with favorable traits are more likely to survive and reproduce. Natural selection works on the whole individual, but only the heritable component of a trait will be passed on to the offspring, with the result that favorable, heritable traits become more common in the next generation. Given enough time, this passive process can result in adaptations and speciation.

In the 1930s, scientists combined Darwinian natural selection with the theory of Mendelian heredity to create the modern evolutionary synthesis, also known as Neo-Darwinism. The modern synthesis describes evolution as a change in the frequency of alleles within a population from one generation to the next. The mechanisms that produce these changes are the basic mechanisms of population genetics: natural selection and genetic drift acting on genetic variation created by mutation, genetic recombination and gene flow.^[1] This theory has become the central organizing principle of modern biology, relating directly to topics such as the origin of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, eusociality in insects, and the staggering biodiversity of the living world.

Because of its potential implications for the origins of humankind, the evolutionary theory has been at the center of many social and religious controversies since it was first introduced.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a work of children's literature by the British mathematician and author, Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, written under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit-hole into a fantasy realm populated by talking playing cards and anthropomorphic creatures.

The tale is fraught with satirical allusions to Dodgson's friends and to the lessons that British schoolchildren were expected to memorize. The Wonderland described in the tale plays with logic in ways that has made the story of lasting popularity with children as well as adults.

The book is often referred to by the abbreviated title Alice in Wonderland (as it is often shortened as). Some printings of this title contain both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking Glass. This alternate title was popularized by the numerous film and television adaptations of the story produced over the years.

Alice was first published on July 4, 1865

A girl named Alice is bored while on a picnic with her older sister. She finds interest in a passing white rabbit, dressed in a waistcoat and muttering "I'm late!", whom she follows down a rabbit-hole, floating down into a dream underworld of paradox, the absurd and the improbable. As she attempts to follow the rabbit, she has several misadventures. She grows to gigantic size and shrinks to a fraction of her original height; meets a group of small animals stranded in a sea of her own previously shed tears; gets trapped in the rabbit's house when she enlarges herself again; meets a baby which changes into a pig, and a cat which disappears leaving only his smile behind; goes to a never-ending tea party; plays a bizarre variation on croquet with an anthropomorphised deck of cards; goes to the shore and meets a Gryphon and a Mock Turtle; and finally attends the courtroom trial of the Knave of Hearts, who has been accused of stealing some tarts. Eventually Alice wakes up underneath a tree back with her sister.

The term "Wonderland," from the title, has entered the language and refers to a marvellous imaginary place, or else a real-world place that one sees as "like a dream come true!" It is widely referenced in popular culture— books and film (see below) and pop music. To note just one example, there is a book by the Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami entitled Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.

"Down the Rabbit-Hole," the Chapter 1 title, has become a popular term for going into an adventure to the unknown. In the film The Matrix, Morpheus says to Neo: "I imagine that right now you're feeling a bit like Alice. Tumbling down the rabbit hole?" In computer gaming, a "rabbit hole" may refer to the initiating element that drives the player to enter the game.

In an Alternate Reality Game, the rabbit hole is the first puzzle, or first event signaling the beginning.

A "white rabbit" has similar connotations, as a signal to the start of an adventure. In The Matrix, Neo's adventure begins after a message on his computer urges him to "Follow the white rabbit."

In Chapter 6, the Cheshire Cat's disappearance prompts Alice to say one of her most memorable lines: "...a grin without a cat! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in all my life!" There is a French film called A Grin Without a Cat (1977), directed by Chris Marker.

In Chapter 7, the Hatter gives his famous riddle without an answer: "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" Although Carroll intended the riddle to have no solution, in a new preface to the 1896 edition of Alice, he proposes several answers: "Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!" Note the spelling of "never" as "nevar"—turning it into "raven" when inverted. This spelling, however, was "corrected" in later editions to "never" and Carroll's pun was lost. Puzzle maven Sam Loyd offered these solutions: because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes; Poe wrote on both; bills and tales are among their characteristics; because they both stand on their legs, conceal their steels (steals), and ought to be made to shut up. Many other answers are listed in The Annotated Alice.

Arguably the most famous quote is used when the Queen of Hearts screams "Off with her head!" at Alice (and everyone else she feels slightly annoyed with). Possibly Carroll here was echoing a scene in Shakespeare's Richard III (III, iv, 76) where Richard demands the execution of Lord Hastings, crying "Off with his head!" The line as used in the 1967 Jefferson Airplane song "White Rabbit" ("Feed your head! Feed your head!") has distinct hallucinogenic connotations.

Q: From your earliest album to the current one, your songs have made the personal political and vice versa. Has your understanding of those realms — “personal” and “political” — changed (okay, evolved) over the years?

AD: Since political edifices are purporting to dictate to me, whether I can or cannot have an abortion, what drugs I can or cannot ingest, where on this earth I can and cannot go, and who on this earth I can love (just to name a few things), then it seems obvious to me that the personal is political. This has always seemed obvious to me. Conversely, once you understand yourself to be connected to all other living things, and the earth beneath your feet, you respond to the oppression of people and the destruction of the environment by governments by taking it personally. It is the latter half of this equation that I am developing as I journey into adulthood and therefore into a position of responsibility and/or accountability to human society. It is an equation that always adds up to one, however. The personal and the political are of one realm; to separate them is artificial.

The Scientist's Answer

The full Darwin quote in fact gives a prescription for how organs of great complexity can arise by slow degrees. A suitable sequence of events has been found, and there are numerous sea creatures alive today whose eyes are stages in that sequence.

It has been calculated that a complete fish eye could have evolved in less than 350,000 years, with almost no mutations. Something that easy should have happened many times, and in fact, taxonomists think that eyes have evolved more than 40 times.

Scientists consider their explanation of eye evolution to be a great triumph for Darwin's idea of Natural Selection.

The critters eat the food. When a critter eats enough food, it reproduces.

Its child is almost exactly like it except that its genetic movement pattern is just slightly different. Each critter has an "X" gene and a "Y" gene which determine the direction that the critter will move at each time step.

The "Garden of Eden" is an area where the food is continuously replenished. Critters that wander in there tend to spawn descendants which evolve into "twirlies". Twirlies like to run in circles so that they can keep coming back to the food in the Garden of Eden.

Evolutionary Computation is the general term for several computational techniques which are based to some degree on the evolution of biological life in the natural world.

My work in evolutionary computation has related to evolution of behavior. I've used evolutionary systems to create behavior control programs for artificial agents. These evolved behavior relate to steering around a simulated environment. In particular I've experimented with corridor following where evolution determines both a sensor morphology and a mapping from sensor output to steering signal. I've also experimented with evolution of players for the game of tag where fitness is based solely on competition.

How Cooperation Can Evolve In A Cheater's World

It’s a truth borne out in biology and economics: Selfishness pays. Viruses can steal enzymes to reproduce. Tax evaders can take advantage of public services to survive and thrive. And, according to game theory, the cheats win out over the altruists every time.

Nuclear reactors could be built more efficiently using supercomputers to artificially "evolve" designs, say engineers from the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

They have found they can speed up the extremely complex process of designing a reactor and generate novel designs from scratch by simulating natural selection.

Designing a nuclear reactor normally involves input from various specialists and the resulting structure can be uniquely influenced by this collaborative process.

"The design that comes out of this lengthy process is typically sub-optimal," says Louis Qualls, a nuclear systems specialist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. "If you started with a different person, or designed pieces in a different order, you would get a different system."

The technology, dubbed Embedded and Communicating Agents, has allowed researchers at Sony's Computer Science Laboratory in France to add a new level of intelligence to the AIBO dog. The robot dog has learnt to see a ball and tell another one where the ball is, if it's moving and what colour it is, and the other is capable of recognising it.
