30 Second Wine Advisor: Recent rants - wineloverspage.com
www.wineloverspage.com/wineadvisor2/tswa20070730.p... While I'm still in rant mode, a word about the Disney studio's recently announced decisions to market - and then not to market - a modest brand of French Chardonnay as a product tie-in with its recently released (and excellent) animated movie, Ratatouille. Disney's quick capitulation to anti-alcohol forces didn't really surprise me, but I'm a more irritated about the California Wine Institute's pathetic eagerness not to offend the "neo-Prohibitionists." As I wrote in our WineLovers Discussion Group, I'd have a lot more respect for the industry if it would take a tough position and say, "Look, if you want to be a teetotaler, fine, but we will not cooperate in your efforts to impose your Puritanical morality on the rest of us. If you don't want your children drinking alcohol, then make your children your business. Frankly, wine in moderation is beneficial to adults, and it's actually not the end of the world if a youngster takes a taste." Opinion: Stalker terrorizes family via cell phone?

The Kuykendall family in Fircrest, Wash., claims that a hacker has been stalking them for four months through their camera phones, using the microphones in the phones to listen to them and the cameras to watch. They say that even when they turn off the phones, the hacker can turn them back on. The family has shared with police and the news media recorded messages left on the voice mail of both family cell phones and the home landline phone. They say these messages demonstrate that the caller knows what the family is doing and even wearing, and that the stalker is threatening school shootings and killing family members and pets. The Kuykendalls say they get such calls almost every day, and they appear to come from the cell phone of the Kuykendall's 16-year-old daughter, Courtney. Film Critic Roger Ebert Kevin Winter / Getty We tend to take for granted any pleasure, however acute, that is offered to us regularly; the gift becomes routine. Only when it's removed do we realize how precious it was. And if, in some real-life Hollywood ending, the gift is restored, we can again savor the privilege, this time more acutely.
