Stephen King Approves of The Mist's New Ending!

November 19, 2007

by Alex Billington

Legendary horror author Stephen King has had two of his stories adapted into feature films this year, the first being 1408 back in June and now The Mist, starring Thomas Jane, Toby Jones and Marcia Gay Harden, hitting theaters this week. Readers of the site should know that I definitely did not like 1408, despite its great reviews and generally positive feedback. Fortunately I've seen The Mist already and it's much better, much scarier, much more thrilling, and overall a better movie. It was not perfect, and there are some flaws or debatable parts, but that doesn't mean it's still good. The ending itself is so good that not only does Stephen King approve of it, but he says he'll kill me if I spoil it!

CNN

(CNN) -- Norman Mailer, the outspoken author whose prize-winning works made him a towering figure on the American literary stage for more than 50 years, is dead. He was 84.

Norman Mailer, shown in February, cultivated a streetwise, brawling, larger-than-life image.

Mailer died about 4:30 a.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, his literary executor, J. Michael Lennon, said.

Author of "The Naked and the Dead," "The Armies of the Night" and "The Executioner's Song," Mailer was probably the most famous of the generation of writers who came of age after World War II -- he was certainly the most colorful, and most pugnaciously so.

LOS ANGELES —  Talks between Hollywood writers and studios abruptly broke off for the weekend, dimming hopes of averting a strike that could cripple the television industry.

The Writers Guild of America has been in talks since July with studios represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Negotiations lasted only about an hour on Friday and were not scheduled to resume until Tuesday.

In statements Friday, each side accused the other of intransigence and expressed frustration at the sluggish pace of negotiations.

Bestselling fantasy writer Robert Jordan, creator of the Wheel of Time series, died Sunday afternoon, after a long bout with amyloidosis. "In the end, he left peacefully and in no pain," reports his "brother/cousin," Wilson on the author's official blog. Fans have known of Jordan's condition for some time, with many worrying that he wouldn't be able to finish his epic saga.

Born and raised in the high plains, Christen Reighter currently attends school in the Texas panhandle. Ever since she was a little girl, she knew she wanted to be a writer; she would compose books, short stories and poems and often read them aloud for her class. Later on, as she learned more of the craft, Christen became more serious about her writing. She completed her first book in the fifth grade—a children’s science fiction—and two years after that began a project that would ultimately become her first novel.

Sometimes it’s hard coming up with a blog post. After all–unlike Marsha, Juliet, Allison, Vicky and Jason–I am a pubbed nonfic writer but not a published author. So what the heck do I know, really, about writing books? Aren’t I just guessing at what’s required to make it in this business? Some days I just don’t know. But here’s what I do know, for sure: I know what can kill a drive, what has held me back and tied me up in knots. So that’s what today’s post is about.

American women novelists are more often bracketed as genre writers -- in chick lit, romance, mystery or historical fiction -- and quickly dismissed.

New Orleans Author Nearly Blows Oprah Moment

Ever since I ran a story on my other blog, Beatrice.com, featuring New Orleans authors TJ Fisher and Joshua Clark, people have been telling me that I should take a look at 1 Dead in Attic, a collection of the columns New Orleans Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose wrote over the months immediately following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
"I stopped having the warm fuzzies for Oprah some years back," said author Deborah Smith after reading Friday's not-so-charitable thoughts about the If I Did It show. Smith tells a story of how BelleBooks wanted to use one of Oprah Winfrey's on-air remarks about one of their authors as a blurb on her new book—after all, if you had a book called Bra Talk, and Oprah had called your author "the best cleavage cop in the business," you'd be all over that, too, right?

Why Denise Brown Went Back to Oprah

Early this morning, I got an email from Denise Brown (left), explaining why she'll be appearing on Oprah today after announcing last month she would not appear with Fred and Kim Goldman to discuss If I Did It, amplifying a brief statement on her blog. "[Oprah Winfrey] personally called to let me know she would not have done a show with the Goldmans had I not said yes originally," Brown wrote in her email. She says she told the talk show host that appearing on the show would be pointless since the Goldmans had already moved up the publication date of the book, demonstrating that it would be impossible to dissuade them from publishing.

Spare Us Oprah Winfrey's "Ethical Dilemmas"

No, really: Am I expected to believe that in 21 years of broadcasting, The Oprah Winfrey Show has never once bumped a guest, and that keeping Fred and Kim Goldman on after Denise Brown refused to appear on the same stage with them should be elevated to the level of a "moral, ethical dilemma," especially given that Oprah didn't seem to have any moral or ethical qualms sticking an entire audience with $7,000 tax tabs for the Pontiacs she gave them?

Earlier, Barnes & Noble said it would not be carrying the O.J. Simpson book, "If I Did It," and I thought it was a great stand to take. It looks like profits have won out over conviction, as they have reversed their decision and will indeed be carrying the book.
A few years back, Holly Bemiss left her position as the manager at San Francisco's A Different Light bookstore and came east to tackle book publicity. Starting out at Simon & Schuster, she made her way up the career ladder to the assistant director's desk at Houghton Mifflin—until, earlier this summer, she decided it was time for another change. She's now working at the Susan Rabiner Literary Agency, where she has an eye out for young authors and narrative non-fiction, as well as graphic novels.

Menaker, who has worked at RH since 1995, minus a 16-month stint as an executive editor at HarperCollins that ended in 2003, told the New York Times that the decision to leave was "absolutely mutual."
Bon Jovi canceled the deal for the band's upcoming book, Believe, Contact Music reported. In April, Flying Dolphin Press, the book's publisher, canceled a benefit concert scheduled for BookExpo America, saying the publication date for the book had been postponed.
