Podcasting without Fruit

These are the presentation materials for a conference session that I give several times a year titled "Podcasting without Fruit."
Huh? What does that mean?

The title is reflective on my own frustration with about 98% of the conference presentations that I have seen in the past three years that have had anything to do with podcasting. These presenters talk about podcasting as if you "HAVE" to have an Apple Computer and use Apple-only software in order to be a podcaster. In fact many of the presentations have been given by Apple employees, which is clearly a good strategy for the Apple Company but not necessarily a helpful solution for the 90% of the computing public who are Windows-users. The last thing I want is to start buying Apple computers for employees who want to start creating podcasts.

What is Podcasting?  (from University of Calgary)

Introduction

Podcasting is a relatively new type of audio broadcasting that has only really been around in its current form since October 2004. It is a set of technologies that let individuals record, publish, find, subscribe and listen to audio over the internet on whatever audio player they have available (it does not require an iPod ).

The "Podfathers" - the guys who first put the pieces together - were Dave Winer and Adam Curry. Dave is a software developer, who has been heavily involved with creating the software that powers weblogs for many years. He is also one of the people responsible for the RSS content syndication technology, which is used as the broadcast mechanism for podcasting. Adam was one of the first VJs on MTV USA. He's been involved with radio and TV broadcasting for almost 2 decades, and is currently one of the most famous podcasters. He broadcasts from his house ("the cottage") in England, to over 10,000 subscribers around the world.

You might hear people apply the term podcast to any or all of these.
  • Single audio files
  • Series of themed audio files
  • Single video files
  • Series of themed video files
  • Screencasts
  • Live/Archived video
or anything else that somehow makes them feel good to include the term "pod" in their sentence.

A new website and well-written guide can be found at PoducateMe dot com.

The guide is 186 pages long, but has a nice table of contents that allows you to jump around easily, and the pages are also rather short so it is not an overwhelmingly long document. This guide is pretty thorough and contains lots of good information.

Podcasting in Education: A Perspective from Bryn Mawr College

Submitted by Laura Blankenship on February 8, 2007 - 8:30am.

If you haven't heard of podcasting in education, then you've likely been hiding under a rock. Ever since Duke launched its iPod initiative a couple of years ago, educators have been exploring not just the use of audio, but the connection of audio to the iPod and to other portable music devices.

Consensus: Podcasting Has No 'Inherent' Pedagogic Value

7/9/2007

By Paul McCloskey

A bevy of recent studies on students' experience listening to recorded lectures via podcasts confirms what many lecturers already know: that the pedagogical value of  podcasts depends almost entirely on student motivation and the learning "context" of the application.

In a comprehensive survey of the latest academic studies on the impact of podcasting on learning and teaching, Ashley Deal, a researcher in the  Office of Technology for Education & the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence at Carnegie Mellon University, found that podcasting follows the pattern of many campus technology innovations.

"As with any educational technology, whether and how podcasting impacts the quality of the learning experience and/or educational outcomes depends largely upon how the technology is put to use,"

Podcasting

Hands-on!! Podcasting can be used in powerful ways to motivate students to develop their traditional as well as digital literacy skills. It can be done safely, is relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to learn with any Internet-connected computer and a basic microphone. This session explores examples of successful classroom podcasts and demonstrates how teachers can start their own classroom podcast.

Podsafe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Podsafe is a term created in the podcasting community to refer to any work which, through its licensing, specifically allows the use of the work in podcasting, regardless of restrictions the same work might have in other realms. For example, a song may be legal to use in podcasts, but may need to be purchased or have royalties paid for over-the-air radio use, television use, and possibly even personal use.

Message to Pod Casters
We invite you to browse through the songs and artists on this site and download anything that strikes your fancy. The artists on this site have released their music under the Creative Commons license and agreed to allow their music to be used by you in any way and form for webcasting, as long as you don't take credit for the original work. We hope you will find something that will be useful to you in your Pod Cast!

How and Where to Locate Podsafe Music

Nothing really polishes a podcast more than background music or theme music. In the music world, these music segments are referred to as intros and extros. While many enjoy streaming Internet Audio and recording songs they like over the Internet, these songs cannot legally be used in a podcast.

Questions We Think You Might Ask About Jing

Jing is such a new idea that we figured many people would have questions about it. This is our first shot at answering some of the questions we think you might have.

What is the Jing Project?

Is Jing a product? Not exactly. Is Jing a “beta”? Well, it’s not exactly that either. Jing is a concept that we’re evaluating to see if it can improve everyday conversations. Determining if Jing will be a product is what we are trying to do by gathering feedback from people like you. We think it’s a great way to improve daily conversations via email, IM chats and blog posts.
