Podcasting Without Fruit?
Introduction - Podcasts
What is Podcasting? (from University of Calgary)
IntroductionPodcasting is a relatively new type of audio broadcasting that has only really been around in its current form since October 2004. It is a set of technologies that let individuals record, publish, find, subscribe and listen to audio over the internet on whatever audio player they have available (it does not require an iPod ). The "Podfathers" - the guys who first put the pieces together - were Dave Winer and Adam Curry. Dave is a software developer, who has been heavily involved with creating the software that powers weblogs for many years. He is also one of the people responsible for the RSS content syndication technology, which is used as the broadcast mechanism for podcasting. Adam was one of the first VJs on MTV USA. He's been involved with radio and TV broadcasting for almost 2 decades, and is currently one of the most famous podcasters. He broadcasts from his house ("the cottage") in England, to over 10,000 subscribers around the world. You might hear people apply the term podcast to any or all of these.

This guide is pretty thorough and contains lots of good information. Podcasting in Education: A Perspective from Bryn Mawr CollegeSubmitted by Laura Blankenship on February 8, 2007 - 8:30am.If you haven't heard of podcasting in education, then you've likely been hiding under a rock. Ever since Duke launched its iPod initiative a couple of years ago, educators have been exploring not just the use of audio, but the connection of audio to the iPod and to other portable music devices. Consensus: Podcasting Has No 'Inherent' Pedagogic Value7/9/2007 By Paul McCloskey A bevy of recent studies on students' experience listening to recorded lectures via podcasts confirms what many lecturers already know: that the pedagogical value of podcasts depends almost entirely on student motivation and the learning "context" of the application. In a comprehensive survey of the latest academic studies on the impact of podcasting on learning and teaching, Ashley Deal, a researcher in the Office of Technology for Education & the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence at Carnegie Mellon University, found that podcasting follows the pattern of many campus technology innovations. "As with any educational technology, whether and how podcasting impacts the quality of the learning experience and/or educational outcomes depends largely upon how the technology is put to use," Creating Podcasts without Editing

This is a great (free) place to store your audio files. They can then be played back by simply linking to the file or by embedding the file in an audio player - such as a Wordpress blog post, or using an Odeo player, etc.

Podcasting can be used in powerful ways to motivate students to develop their traditional as well as digital literacy skills. It can be done safely, is relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to learn with any Internet-connected computer and a basic microphone. This session explores examples of successful classroom podcasts and demonstrates how teachers can start their own classroom podcast.

Finding Music you can Use - Podsafe Music
PodsafeFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation, search
Podsafe is a term created in the podcasting community to refer to any work which, through its licensing, specifically allows the use of the work in podcasting, regardless of restrictions the same work might have in other realms. For example, a song may be legal to use in podcasts, but may need to be purchased or have royalties paid for over-the-air radio use, television use, and possibly even personal use. How and Where to Locate Podsafe MusicNothing really polishes a podcast more than background music or theme music. In the music world, these music segments are referred to as intros and extros. While many enjoy streaming Internet Audio and recording songs they like over the Internet, these songs cannot legally be used in a podcast. Posting Podcasts in Blogs

We think it’s a great way to improve daily conversations via email, IM chats and blog posts.
