Today was my blog's second anniversary. It passed by quietly.

I found myself flying a kite in the park, alone, with an ice cream cone. I wanted to leave, to go find people (mainly Renee, who had just abandoned me), but the string to the kite had to be wound up first, and that required two hands, really. The cone and ice cream was just too big and delicious for me to throw out, or stick in my mouth all at once.

As we waited for his luggage, (we waited a long time because we weren't paying the slightest attention to it and they went around prolly 8 times), I couldn't seem to stop kissing him. Not that I TRIED to stop kissing him, but ......

And then I took him home.

I'd like to add that I'm wearing playboy bunny slippers and am going to go downstairs to watch Princess Diaries 2 or perhaps Nanny McPhee while eating scaldingly hot soup here in a minute.

After Tony Walsh, a self-described "virtual reporter," broke the news of Yaffle's cornfield confinement on his Web site Clickable Culture (www.secretlair.com), rumors spread that Yaffle was being punished because he had attempted to crash Second Life's servers. That was an exaggeration. Crashing Second Life's servers would be like sabotaging the power supply to a smallish American city and would have undoubtedly resulted in Yaffle being banned from the community for life. In fact, Yaffle was exiled to the cornfield for three days for reverse engineering a bit of computer code to steal virtual items from a vendor in Second Life. "The cornfield is not used often, and it is only for white-collar crimes," explains Catherine Smith of Linden Lab, the San Francisco–based company that created and maintains the Second Life site. "It is supposed to be funny more than anything."

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by nearly 100,000 people from around the globe.

Not long ago, I posted a question here about what rights photographers have to take shots under certain circumstances -- specifically, if on private property such as a mall. I got some good responses, but set out to get what I hoped to be the definitive answers to my questions.

If you can see it, you can shoot it

Let's get the easy stuff out of the way. Aside from sensitive government buildings (e.g., military bases), if you're on public property you can photograph anything you like, including private property. There are some limits — using a zoom lens to shoot someone who has a reasonable expectation of privacy isn't covered — but no one can come charging out of a business and tell you not to take photos of the building, period.
