Patrick,
You said you have problems making a backup copy of a DVD. You have obsolete DVD copy software.
As of mid-2005, DVDDecrypter (free) was the best one I found for making back-up copies of protected DVDs, but then the project was shut down... but, the program still works, until newer copy-protection comes out. (But that could obsolete all DVD players made before 2006...)
General Method:
Step 1: Ripping (use DVDDecrypter) to copy to Hard Drive
Step 2: Compressing (use DVDShrink, if you have a dual layer DVD and you want to make one single-layer DVD)
Step 3: Burning (use DVDDecrypter)
I have not yet used TWO DVD drives, I copy from DVD to hard drive, then burn a DVD. Do you copy directly from DVD to DVD? Here is a collection of several DVD-related utilities, free downloads... a zip file....
IF DVDDecrypter 3.5.4.0 fails, try DVDFab Decrypter 3.0.3.5.
Get DVD_Decrypter_3.5.4.0 download (the very last one released).
These tools are recommended on either www.videohelp.com or www.doom9.org or www.afterdawn.com or www.cdfreaks.com Those are the best sites I found for help on ripping, transcoding (compressing), and burning DVDs. They also have some very good HOW-TO guides. Many DVDs are now more than 4 GB, with dual layer. To fit those movies on ONE DVD, you must compress (transcode) them. Watch out for CLONEDVD, it corrupted my REGISTRY last year, and I had to reinstall Windows.
How to use WinZip to email a photo collection:Select some photos, compress them into one folder, and email it... Steps: 1. Open the folder, where you have your photos on a hard drive, or cd, or external storage USB... iPod... whatever. 2. Right click on white space in the folder, then you should see the a menu, select: New... Compressed (zipped) folderCall it Photos_Will_yymmdd.zip or something like that. The .zip is important! 3. Drag and drop whatever you want to add into that ZIP file. Remember, it looks like a file, but it works like a folder. When you are done, It may be too big for email... 4. To send the ZIP file: When you are all done, open a web browser window. (IE or FFx) You are going to upload that .ZIP file/folder to a website for holding, and then email just the URL, for anyone to be able to download it. Go to any of these websites: http://www.mediafire.com/or http://www.yousendit.com/or http://www.dropload.com/Think of it like a locker box where you are going to drop off a file, and send the pickup address via email, instead of the big file. Remember, anyone who has the URL can download the file. It works better for everyone that way. These services hold your file for a few weeks... it depends on which service you use. Let me know if you have any questions... George
DVD Decrypter RIP?
I'm hoping the author can release/post the source in another country where the law permits more fair use (Google cache is still up)....The DVD Decrypter author has announced that he has been served with an order to cease his development of DVD Decrypter. The developer has been forced to hand over all source code and the domain that he was using. It is thought that it could be Sony who have served this notice, as it is rumoured that he broke their new copyright protection within 72 hours of its release.
Old news, from mid-2005:
|
Hello world,
I"ve got some good news and some bad news.Let's start with the good.... (tumble weed passes by) Ok, and now onto the bad: DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 is the last version you"ll ever see.We hoped this day would never come, but it has, and I can promise you, nobody is more gutted about it than I am.
What started as a bit of fun, putting a GUI around some existing code, turned into something that I can only describe as 'part of me' ' yes, I know that's sad ;-) As I"ve recently been made aware (by a letter, hand delivered to my door, last Tuesday), due to some law that was changed back in October 2003, circumventing copy protection isn"t allowed. |

on your PC without ripping for 60 minutes?
Insert your CSS- (Content Scrambling System) and RPC (Region Code

DVDFab Decrypter 3.0.3.5 (10/30/2006)
QUESTION: What movie would it not work on? Did you have the latest update for it?
ANSWER: You may need to try a different program like RipIt4Me to get the job done. I normally use Fab, VobBlanker, Shrink or Recode2, and then burn.
There have been a couple of movies that I have had to use RipIt4Me on.
AnyDVD isn't free, but very good.
I believe RipIt4Me is free and does the job fine.

ImgBurn carries on from where DVD Decrypter left off! (Well, for the burning part anyway!)
ImgBurn can write most types of CD / DVD images and it supports all the latest writers (including booktype / bitsetting on many of the major ones - i.e. BenQ, LiteOn, NEC, Plextor, Sony). You can even use ImgBurn to erase / format your rewritable media!
ImgBurn will try its very best to burn your DVD-Video double layer images using the layer break you've specified in the IFO files, but it can also calculate the best place for you, to save you the trouble.
Advanced functionality can be found in context menus that appear when you right click on various bits of the user interface. Can you find them all??!! |

FFDSHOW rev. 529 (20061113)
FFDSHOW is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing several
video formats, including DivX, XviD, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 movies.
Filter also supports nowadays decoding of virtually all audio formats
used in movies, including AC3, DTS, MP3 and Ogg Vorbis,
and several subtitle formats.
Codec also features postprocessing
capabilities, support for virtually all MPEG-4 video formats, support for
various processor enhancements (such as SSE and MMX), etc. FFDSHOW is
released as an open source software under GPL license agreement.
To
summarize its main idea, the FFDSHOW consumes way less CPU power than original
DivX or XviD codecs, even with maximum post-processing. At the same time the
post-processing seems to give excellent quality results and allows more
configuring than the original DivX codec. It can even automaticly reduce
post-processing if your CPU is getting overloaded. The noise filter adds a kind
of a rasterising effect to the picture - might be useful in some cases.
After our reviewers tried FFDSHOW they removed the DivX codecs from
their PCs and never looked back.
Please note! Some Antivirus software
claims that FFDSHOW contains a trojan. However our own tests indicate that this
is a False Positive

Media Player Classic v6.4.9.0
Media Player Classic is an extremely light-weight media player for
Windows. It looks just like the good-old Media Player v6.4, but has lots of nice
extra features.
MPC has, for instance, a built in DVD player with
real-time zoom, support for AVI subtitles, QuickTime and RealVideo support
(requires QT and/or Real player), and lots more.
Definitely a great
replacement for the huge and clumsy Microsoft Media Players.
Did you
know that all Windows distributions still include the old Media Player v6.4? You
can run it by clicking Start, Run and entering MPLAYER2.EXE

These guides explain how you can backup a DVD to one or two DVD±R disc(s).
There are several options to choose from, ranging from keeping only the main

Partial backups
A partial backup is a backup containing less material than the original disc.
It can be only the main movie, main movie and menus, or the whole disc minus
some extras you have no use for. Partial backups can also involve re-encoding
some of the features of the disc but only few MPEG encoders can be used to do
that.

Insert the source
DVD-Video in your DVD-ROM or DVD Writer. Launch DVD Decrypter (If you have
problems running DVD Decrypter read this). 1. Select
Mode -> ISO -> Read 2. Select your

Number of layers: 2, it is a DVD-9 disc and then it wont fit on one
recordable DVD so we must reconvert it. Jump to the DVD-9 to one
recordable DVD section here. If it says Number of layers: 1, it
is a DVD-5 disc and you can then copy and rip the entire DVD as an exact copy.

How to copy multiple DVD movies to 1 DVDR with DVD Shrink
This guide will explain how to create your own DVD containing multiple movies from other DVD's. The resulting DVD will have no menu's however. The method is quite simple and suitable for beginners. As an example in this guide I will be using two of my own retail DVD's. I will create a DVD with just the main movies. It is also possible for you to add in trailers and any other extra's you want, but the more you add the more the lesser the quality.
Introduction & Requirements
DVD Shrink - This is needed to Author your new DVD. Nero Burning Rom - This is needed to burn your new DVD.
DVD Shrink is a terrific program that you can use to backup full DVD's to DVD-R in a very small amount of time. It also has the possibility to re-author DVD's, which is what we will be using in this guide. Nero Burning Rom is probably the worlds most popular burning application, we will use it to burn your new DVD to a DVDR. Make sure you have enough space on your Hard Drive. You would be pretty safe with 20GB free, maybe less.
Rip your DVDs
You will need to copy both your DVDs to your HDD. If they are copy protected you will need to use appropriate tools to assist you in creating your backup.
Sorry, this section of the guide had to be removed by the AfterDawn administration to comply with Finnish Copyright Laws that went into effect on 1 January, 2006.

One-click DVD rips :: DVDShrink
if someone (not you, of course) wants to rip & burn rental DVDs onto his hard drive, he doesn't need DVDShrink; he needs DVD Decrypter (or something similar). This imaginary person would only need DVDShrink if he wanted to shrink the size of a full-length retail DVD so he could fit it onto a DVD-R. If he's only interested in *temporarily* ripping & burning to his *hard drive*, as has been suggested, shrinking the size of the file reduces the quality of the video, so not only is DVDShrink unnecessary, it's counterproductive.
@Scott: I see what you're saying, but I still use DVD Shrink so that I can keep my rips as small as possible, and in the event that I ever do want to burn a backup, it will generally be small enough (I don't have a dual-layer DVD burner).
Ok, so it's all well and good to have a backup DVD copy on a DVD-R. But what about creating a collection (of your own movies) in DIVX format on your HD? 4-5GB per disk is a bit too much storage space for me. And I know Divx can look and sound (AC3 audio) nearly as good as the original without the huge file size.
I too use Ripit4me to rip my DVD's and for those of you who are dead set on using DVD Decrypter, well RipIt4Me actually combines the use of DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, FixVTS, and IfoEdit to create a one-click atmosphere that is easy enough for your 4-year old to use. I think the best feature is that it checks for updates everytime you use it so your always up to date on your protections and the program still lends itself to the tweak geeks who must use the custom features of all programs!
DVDFab Decrypter is a good replacement for DVD Decrypter - it's updated regularly and handles newer encryption schemes - and it's free.
As others have mentioned - no need to use DVD Shrink unless you are going to burn a dual-layer disc to single-layer (which you can do after you've ripped the disc if you want to). DVD Shrink can take a while to do its compression - waste of time if you don't need it.
Note 1: Don't have any on-the-fly decrypting tools, such as DVD43, DVD Region+CSS Free or AnyDVD running in the background while you use RipIt4Me and while you rip the
DVD with DVD Decrypter.
Note 2: If you have auto play activated or that the inserted DVD
automatically starts another application - turn off that feature before you run
RipIt4Me. It will only create problems for you. You can read in this guide -
Turn
Off the CD-ROM Auto run - how you do this.
Note 3: RipIt4Me will change some of your default settings in DVD
Decrypter to assure that they are the best ones when ripping protected DVDs. The
changed settings should not cause any problems for you when you rip other DVDs.
The original settings are restored immediately after the rip. See FAQ 27.
Note 4: Your screen setting should be set to 1024 x 768 and above for best
performance.
Note 5: Got a problem? Read the FAQs first and then try the Forum.
RipIt4Me is a freeware utility that helps you backup your copy protected DVDs.
Recently released DVDs are now very often equipped with stronger copy protections - such as ARccOS™ and RipGuard DVD. Programs like DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter cannot handle these types of discs.
With the help of RipIt4Me, ripping these DVDs will be a very easy task. The program is fully automated and the wizard will guide you through all the necessary steps involved. If you prefer, there is also a true "1-Click" mode that will perform all the involved steps automatically for you.
Please refer to the official RipIt4Me Guide and FAQ for more information on how to use this program.
RipIt4Me Version 1.5.7.0
A super easy way to backup your protected DVDs!
This program is a freeware utility that helps you backup your copy protected DVDs.
Recently released DVDs are now very often equipped with stronger copy
protections - such as ARccOS™ and RipGuard DVD - that programs like DVD Shrink
or DVD Decrypter have problems handling.
With the help of RipIt4Me, ripping these DVDs will be a very easy task. The program is fully automated and the wizard will guide you through all the necessary steps
involved. If you prefer, there is also a true "1-Click" mode that will perform all the involved
steps automatically for you.
How the program works
RipIt4Me uses DVD Decrypter as a ripping engine and FixVTS to clean the ripped
files.
It shouldn't take you much more time for you to use this method than if you had
used DVD Decrypter on its own.
In short:
- Start RipIt4Me.
- Insert your original DVD that you wish to backup in your DVD reader/burner.
- The DVD will then be ripped to your hard disk.
- After the rip, RipIt4Me will clean up the DVD and, if necessary, remove the bad cells from
the VOB files, remove any fake titlesets and fix the pointers by running
FixVTS.
- Once this is done, you may choose to have RipIt4Me make your DVD start at the first valid menu.
- Finally, RipIt4Me will open the ripped files in DVD Shrink for you.

I had trouble with Bewitched as well... DVD Decryter and Smart Ripper both failed. I used DVDFab Decryter without any problem, but did some "Googling" to see if I could find out why this DVD wasn't being cooperative. Excellent post here:

'dvd identifier' retrieves and
interprets the pre-recorded information that is present on dvd (dvd+r,
dvd+rw, dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd-ram), hd dvd (hd dvd-r, hd dvd-rw, hd dvd-ram) and blu-ray (bd-r, bd-re). This information
contains a variety of parameters such as disc manufacturing information
and supported write speeds. Even though some of this information is usually
printed on the packaging, the brand name may differ from the actual
manufacturer or sometimes there might not even be any packaging
information at all.
To summarize : 'dvd identifier' offers a reliable method of
accurately identifying a disc's real manufacturer.
How to Send Large Files without Email: Best Services Online
DVD Decrypter can rip the whole movie to an ISO file that can be mounted in
daemon tool or burned on a DVD using a DVD recorder. Furthermore it can burn
such images to a recordable DVD disc. It can also be used to change the region
of your DVD drive and display the region code of the drive.
SmartRipper furthermore creates a detailed info file about all your VOBs
contain, audio streams, subtitle streams, chapter positions, etc. as well as a
DVD2AVI project file (though that functionality is far from perfect).
'dvd identifier' is published as freeware.

how can i perform the same or similar task as i used to (for 1:1 DL copy)
and to make a perfect/compatible copy
May I suggest RipItForMe -- a link to it is on the
news page when you first navigate to the doom forums. It takes care of arccos /
protected disks very well.
As MuttLover suggested, RipIt4Me can handle the
advanced copy protections and will produce files or an .ISO that you can burn.
ImgBurn v2.0 can import the files from a file mode backup.
You are both right. I searched for RipIt4Me and found a guide for DL rip/burn
including ofcourse DVDDECRYPTER, IMGBURN and FIXVTS.
