Worked for Mercedes dealer 12 years.
On-site inspections more difficult, his Santa Clara shop is better.
Recommendations:
C280 - good; bigger engine, more reliable engine than 230.
300E - ok, popular, many available, easier to find parts, easier to maintain.
190E - ok, better with 2.6 L; (4 cyl engine has more mechanical issues,
more expensive to maintain)
1986 - E - new body.
260E - before 86 - smaller engine, transmission, more expensive to maintain.
E320 - newer family, more complex, more expensive to maintain.

the modern diesels with the new low-sulfer fuel dont have any of those old problems I could recommend looking at 190e 2.6 cars 89-93 300sdl 300d turbo, 300se 420 sel avoid diesels made for ca only, 84 and 85. 300d 124 body is also good DD ~Mercedes FACTORY TRAINED Technician (THE MBZ DOC)
