This is the nearby (300m) oceanfront hotel Was a Holiday Inn Express, now privately owned. Louise checked this one out and says it's nice. Sounds like 3-star ...like most US beach hotels. This is a converted condo complex that is managed and rented out as a hotel. Louise say it is also within 300m or so from the hotel, but the conversion to hotel made it feel slightly odd to her. Nothing wrong with it, just the layout (like no lobby area) was strange. It will certainly work as an alternative hotel. Notes - Overview
Cottage is booked. That's going to be the "lobby and all-night bar" and center for meeting up to ride over to Chaleston, etc. Hotels nearby -within easy walking distance- will provide the rooms.
Going this route, we have more flexibility room-wise. No real change in the underlying plan except now we don't have to worry so much about who sleeps where, who gets to share a bathroom, etc. and can expand the invitation list within reason. We're probably less than 10 miles from downtown Charleston, but in the South suburban taxi service isn't like more urban areas --I don't know what to expect regarding taxis. I'll bring transportation able to handle 12 so we can get into town for meals & pubcrawls. Obviously, if a bunch of non-drivers show up we're going to need more vehicles and drivers. I haven't explored a Plan B on this. If we have a bunch show up logistics are going to be hellatious. We had 14 or so in Barcelona for about 4 days. And 6 or so in Amsterdam. In many ways, I've come to enjoy that format/size a lot. Not quite the rip-roaring rockstar-type event of pubcons 1 & 2, but a lot of the same feel as for real eyeball-to-eyeball, 24-hr exchange of info, ideas, and motivation. Venues like Vegas have -frankly- been disappointing on that aspect. We meet and eat, yeah, but the old "Islington lobby" feel is missing. Transportation
