Torvalds' Ode to GPLv2
So, it seems that as long as Stallman and the other authors of the GPLv3 stick to their guns that the new license must include its current patent language, its objections to DRM, and its additional restrictions section, it will not be used in Linux. For Linus, and the majority of senior Linux kernel developers, the best open-source license is already here -- and it's the GPLv2.
Linux on board: Blowing the lid off of TiVo
www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-lob...
It's particularly interesting to note that the GPL, while it does compel TiVo to produce source code for their kernels, doesn't really keep them from building a box that runs Linux but won't let you change anything. The interesting aspects of this box are mostly in studying how it does what it does and how various open source tools and technologies are used to build an embedded application.

So far, it seems that people paid by Red Hat (Alan Cox) are more responsible (and less rushed to go forward frantically at any cost) than people paid by Novell (Greg Kroah-Hartman). Go figure.

Mandriva Linux 2007 PowerPack Edition review - Software in Review
www.softwareinreview.com/cms/content/view/53/
The Jem Report
There are three kinds of bugs in desktop operating systems: temporary (one-time errors or problems that relate to Internet resources); fixable (run a couple of commands or apply existing updates to take care of it); and serious (makes the operating system unusable, may never be properly addressed in the current release). Previous Mandriva releases have had at least one "serious" bug each, with many "fixable" (though you might have had to wait for a long time to get the patch to fix some things) and few "temporary" bugs. Mandriva 2007 PowerPack Edition is the inverse: mostly "temporary" bugs, with a few "fixables" and no "serious" bugs to speak

hmm...or is it tht no serious bugs have been found as yet? ;)

It’s known that programmers swear a lot. There’s always fucks, shits, cunts, bitches, crap. There’s the kernel fuck count, for example, which shows the number of findings of “fuck” and “love” in the Linux kernel, over different versions of the kernel.
Fucks per programming language and license

ah...so sad windows code aint open source... :D

Opposing Digital Rights Mismanagement - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)
www.gnu.org/philosophy/opposing-drm.html

Facing these threats to our freedom, what should the free software community do? Some say we should give in and accept the distribution of our software in ways that don't allow modified versions to function, because this will make our software more popular. Some refer to free software as “open source,” that being the slogan of an amoral approach to the matter, which cites powerful and reliable software as the highest goals. If we allow companies to use our software to restrict us, this “open source DRM” could help them restrict us more powerfully and reliably. Those who wield the power could benefit by sharing and improving the source code of the software they use to do so. We too could read that source code--read it and weep, if we can't make a changed version run. For the goals of freedom and community--the goals of the free software movement--this concession would amount to failure.

We developed the GNU operating system so that we could control our own computers, and cooperate freely in using them in freedom. To seek popularity for our software by ceding this freedom would defeat the purpose; at best, we might flatter our egos. Therefore we have designed version 3 of the GNU GPL to uphold the user's freedom to modify the source code and put modified versions to real use.

The debate about the GPL v3 is part of a broader debate about DRM versus your rights. The motive for DRM schemes is to increase profits for those who impose them, but their profit is a side issue when millions of people's freedom is at stake; desire for profit, though not wrong in itself, cannot justify denying the public control over its technology. Defending freedom means thwarting DRM.

Linux News: Viewpoint: What Differentiates Linux from Windows?
www.linuxinsider.com/story/33089.html
Recently I read somewhere that submitting bug reports is considered at contribution. I guess that's obvious, but for some reason it hadn't occured to me. I have reported bugs a couple of times! Excellent. That means I can stop feeling guilty about my lack of contributedness, and maybe go and read some ctrl-alt-del, content in the knowledge that I am not such a freeloader after all.
Some of the cool things you can install include w32codecs (for watching porn), mplayer (for watching porn), realplayer (for watching porn), frostwire (for downloading porn), azureus (for downloading porn), wine (for getting drunk while watching porn), plus a whole heap of other stuff that doesn't seem to have much to do with porn for some reason.

Sorry. What I was trying to say is, The World Wide Web was invented so that people who are not computer geeks can download porn. In order to use the Web you are going to need some kind of “Web Browser” (Damn those Department of Homeland Security fascist bastards). The best web browser available today is Mozilla Firefox, mostly because you can extend it with special plugins, such as “Titty Search”, “Save Porn in Folder”, “Flasherblock”, and “Flog This”.
