Correlation/co-variation
Two properties are correlated when the value of one varies systematically with the value of the other – a positive correlation occurs if the values move in the same direction (up or down), while it is a negative correlation if the values move in opposite directions. Correlational research, unlike experimental research, does not attempt to manipulate independent variables, but seeks to uncover significant statistical correlations between two or more properties or variables, for example, as with smoking and lung cancer risk.
