When I've been away from my PC and other sources of breaking news for more than a few hours, I get the horrible feeling that the world is moving on without me. What's going on? Did Redmond get wiped out by a meteor shower? Has Iran deployed a missile that can reach Sparta? Did Paris Hilton escape from prison?

As a hardcore news junky, I've developed a list of focused web pages that together give me an instant "fix" of every major event in the world.

As you can see, I'm not here to cure you of your news addiction. I'm an enabler.

In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

The Dodo, a bird of Mauritius, became extinct during the mid-late 17th century after humans destroyed the forests where the birds made their homes and introduced animals that ate their eggs.

The Holocene extinction event is a name customarily given to the widespread, ongoing mass extinction of species during the modern Holocene epoch. The large number of extinctions span numerous families of plants and animals including mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and arthropods; a sizeable fraction of these extinctions are occurring in the rainforests. Because the rate of this extinction event appears to be much more rapid than the "Big Five" mass extinctions, it is also known as the Sixth Extinction. Since 1500 AD, 784 extinctions have been documented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources^[1]. However, since most extinctions are likely to go undocumented, scientists estimate that during the last century, between 20,000 and two million species have become extinct, but the precise total cannot be determined more accurately within the limits of present knowledge. Up to 140,000 species per year (based on Species-area theory)^[2] may be the present rate of extinction based upon upper bound estimating.

Researchers develop new robot kits that can be easily assembled

Designed to be built with easily obtainable parts, the Telepresence Robot Kit (TeRK) was introduced by associate robotics professor Illah Nourbakhsh and his team of researchers at the Center for Innovative Robotics last Wednesday.

TeRK is a robot kit that can be built by virtually anyone, from children to adults, and it is meant for people with little or no programming background.

New Delhi: When it comes to robots, we know they're clever at doing things - but what about machines that can think and feel for themselves?

Though it might sound a bit like science fiction, but the technology for artificial intelligence to have emotions already exists and a scientist in South Korea is claiming a breakthrough in the development of human-like machines.

A 25-year-old man who has lived his entire life in the United States has been dumped in Sweden by American authorities.

Charlie Edgmon was born in Sweden and is a Swedish citizen, but moved to Seattle with his mother as a baby. He speaks only English, and leaves three children behind him in Seattle, Aftonbladet reports.

TOKYO: Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will take a 10-day trip in late May to Sweden, Britain and the three Baltic countries, the government said Friday.

The imperial couple will depart Tokyo on May 21 for Stockholm, where they will meet with Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Security 'guru' questions the need for a security industry

The supposed security guru Bruce Schneier recently addressed the Infosecurity Show in London, questioning why the security industry exists at all.

Controversially, and rather simplistically, he seemed to suggest that the security industry's existence indicates the willingness of other technology companies to ship insecure hardware and software.

"We shouldn't have to come and find a company to secure our email. Email should already be secure. We shouldn't have to buy from somebody to secure our network or servers. Our networks and servers should already be secure," he said.

Please, Sweden, Seattlest Needs a New Shirt

Seattlest is too cool for the Gap and too busy for thrift. How's a thirty-something guy to dress himself, then? We handle it by wearing the same two pairs of jeans and the same four shirts in different configurations every day. Then, once a year, when we're in Chicago to visit family and friends we make a point to get to H&M downtown to replace two of our shirts. Right now we're kind of hurting--the last visit to Chicago happened to be in February when it was a billion below. We were on Michigan Avenue, even, but couldn't make it the last few blocks to H&M. It was like being turned back from the summit of Everest with only a hundred feet or so to go: we could have gotten our two shirts but we would have sacrificed a few fingers or toes to frostbite for them. If you're not familiar with H&M they're like the Ikea of clothing. Aside from also being Swedish, they sell stylish (arguably), cheaply manufactured (arguably) clothes for reasonable (unarguably) prices. You can look reasonably well-dressed if you outfit yourself head to toe there, and, ok, it is a little like Urban Outfitters but you'll be a lot less cheesy, a little more Euro and will be enfattening the wallet of some faceless Swedes instead of that right-wing guy who owns Urban Outfitters. The first time we went into an H&M we were in Berlin where they were on almost every single corner, like Starbucks or something. It was paradise. We buy our underwear there, and almost exclusively there. We need a fifth shirt, badly, to round out the work week. It's been a while and we're getting desperate, which is why this wholly unsubstantiated, but entirely believable rumor has us so excited:

hi- i heard a rumor this weekend that h&m is opening a store in the university village. i went to h&m's website and i cannot find ANYTHING on it... ?

Oh please let that be true.
