chance

Chance

The likelihood or probability of an event;

occurring without intent or design;

(apparent) random or accidental outcome;

also: an event within a system caused by factors external to that system can be termed a chance event;

and in a sense related to probability: a random occurrence determinable or describable by probability theory, but which is the result of numerous independent and complexly-interacting factors which, in practice, render the specific causal sequence impenetrable.
