Sample

A group of things - events, objects, people, etc. - selected from a larger population.

 

To enable good generalizations to be made a sample should be both fair and relevant. Fair in that it is sufficient in size, and relevant in that it is representative (see below).

Representative sample

A sample possessing all relevant features of the target population and thereby closely resembling the population on the target property or properties.
