Figures of speech

A type of rhetoric involving abstract or symbolic expressions and using language to achieve a particular effect, such as giving greater emphasis, novelty to grab attention, or as an attempt to clarify – sometimes though the use of figures of speech may actually make things less clear.

Examples are metaphors, similes, euphemisms, irony, rhetorical questions, and hyperbole.
