Problem

A situation in which some components or characteristics are known, while others if ascertained or determined would be likely to lead to a solution, are unknown.

More generally: any matter, person, situation, or thing which presents difficulties in dealing with, solving, or overcoming; also, a puzzle, question, etc., set for solution, or a statement requiring a solution by means of one or more (mathematical) operations.
