Co-variation

The view that in deciding whether an action should be attributed to an actors internal disposition or to the external situation, three factors are taken into account:

 

  • distinctiveness: the extent to which the action is restricted to that situation;
  • consensus: the proportion of people who behave in the manner of interest in that situation; 
  • consistency: the frequency with which actors perform the action in other situations.
