Controversies Matters about which people perceive there to be something substantive which may be said for each disputant or opposing "side's" case in public discourse, usually involving hotly contestable claims about which "good people may disagree". Can involve a great deal of uncertainty about the principle claims in the domain concerned or those central to the issue at hand. In some instances the term pseudo-controversy would be appropriate in that one side's claims about an issue are clearly credible and compelling to those with relevant expertise, while other sides' claims have little to recommend them, yet for various psychological, social, and historical reasons the matter is seen in the public mind to be controversial.
