Type 1 and Type 2 errors Essentially, Type 1 errors occur when we fail to believe a truth, while Type 2 errors happen when we believe a falsehood, or put more formally: nType I error: The error of rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true and accepting the experimental hypothesis when the data do not support that hypothesis. nType II error: The error of accepting the null hypothesis when it is false and rejecting the experimental hypothesis when the data are supportive of that hypothesis.
Type 1 “Hit”: not believing a falsehood. Type 2 “Hit”: believing a truth.
