Statistical analysis

The subjecting of data collected to systematic examination, interpretation, analysis, and summarization to ascertain or determine relationships, patterns, trends, or underlying causes between variables represented in the data – usually with a view to making valid generalizations about the population of interest, assuming that the manner in which the data were collected allows for this to be done satisfactorily.
