EMS 3O

EMS 3O (Catholic): Unit 1
ELO1012790
   Activities not hyperlinked
The examination of basic media theory and of the key concepts of media literacy in this unit lays the foundation for the course. The key concepts form a spiraling curriculum that is revisited and developed within each of the units in this course. Literacy today must include more than just the printed word. Exploring the key concepts promotes a literacy that applies to all areas of mass media. The movement of the Catholic Church since Vatican II has been one that invites its members to be able to read "the signs of the times." Developing an understanding of the key concepts as seen through the lens of faith allows students to explore in a critical fashion their relationship to mass media. Students will demonstrate their understanding through personal reflection, daily participation, creative writing, viewing of appropriate media pieces, reading, and group work.

EMS 3O: Unit 1: Your Generation
ELO1008010
  Activities not hyperlinked
This unit introduce students to media literacy concepts. Students are given opportunities to show what they already know beforehand and how they view popular culture (music, sport, advertising) afterward.

EMS 3O (Catholic):
Unit 2: Entire Unit: Television - What's Inside the Box?
ELO1012820
Activities not hyperlinked
By examining the role of television in today's world, students will approach television with a critical as opposed to a passive mind. By encouraging a critical thinking/cultural studies approach to television, students will develop analytical skills that will help them to make informed decisions not only in the media classroom, but also beyond. Students work through the following activities: 1)Introduction to Television - Definitions; 2)Programming Strategies; 3)Television Genres; 4)Stereotypes; 5)Violence. There is ample opportunity to reflect on Catholic teachings regarding dignity of the human being, the inclusiveness of all members of society, and effective communication. Moreover, students should throughout the unit, consistently endeavour to use and integrate their Catholic faith tradition, in the critical analysis of the arts, media, technology and information systems to enhance the quality of life.

EMS 3O: Unit 2: Media Issues
ELO1008030
Activities not hyperlinked
This unit looks at media issues by exploring four areas in which media have a powerful influence. Students first study stereotypes and how they are presented in the media. Then they study the issue of violence in the media. They also discuss and analyse the role of private and public media, and the global influence of North American media. Students see that there are other approaches to these issues besides the ones that are presented in the mainstream media.

ELO1012850
  Activities not hyperlinked
Unit consists of 4 activities. Students will have the opportunity to examine the social, moral, and ethical implications of computer technology. Computer literacy involves not only the ability to use the computer and the Internet, but also the ability to understand and evaluate the effects of this technology on our society. Students will examine the role of this technology in their lives and discover how the Catholic Church has responded to it in various Church documents. The great fallacy of "The Wired World" is that the Internet provides information - not knowledge. The Internet provides only information. Knowledge is gained by organizing, evaluating, and drawing conclusions about information. Students will be encouraged to explore the various aspects of web design, advertising, privacy issues, and web page content. The teacher will assist students by providing activities that facilitate this exploration through web page design, writing reviews of web pages, group work, and researching topics such as web-based advertising and privacy on the web.

EMS 3O: Unit 4: Entire Unit: Media & the Consumer
ELO1008110
   Activities not hyperlinked
In this unit, students gain an understanding of the connections between the media and the consumer. Students examine the relationship between media and consumer behaviour, codes of advertising, techniques used and relevant audience. Students deconstruct advertisements to reveal their explicit and implicit messages. The culminating activity involves the creation of a media product focused on selling.

EMS 3O (Catholic): Unit 5: Entire Unit: Stop the Presses! - The World of Print
ELO1012880
   Activities not hyperlinked
Newspapers and magazines provide interesting and timely curriculum content for the modern-day classroom. They show us how popular culture is evolving in our time. They describe and analyse what is happening in the world using the printed word and pictures. There is a great deal of information each and every day in these print documents. This information is very powerful, but it comes with a price. Newspapers and magazines are not value-free. There is a great need to develop a critical awareness of how the printed word may manipulate our values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours. The main aim of this unit is to help students to develop the ability to deconstruct print media so that they can evaluate these media in terms of their own personal, social, and religious values in light of the Gospel. The teacher will assist students by providing activities that facilitate this exploration through newspaper and magazine design, magazine and newspaper advertising, group work, and researching topics such as kinds of news stories, the role of the religious press and the decision-making process of getting a story into print.

EMS 3O: Unit 5: Entire Unit: Raise the Hype!
ELO1008130
   Activities not hyperlinked
This culminating unit draws together the skills of research, analysis, selection of appropriate media, creation of media and various writing forms from each of the preceding units and provides an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their personal understanding of a media issue. The final product can take the form of a multimedia campaign about one issue that was either covered in the course or which they identify as being of strong interest to them. Students choose an audience for their campaign and they must use a variety of media forms in their campaign. The assessment of this unit should form a substantial portion of the final evaluation for the course.

ICS3M: Unit 2: Problem Solving Models - Lesson and Activities
ELO1003844

It would be unfair to ask anyone to solve problems without effective tools to help along the way. The nature of programming requires programmers to first solve the problem at hand, then create an ordered set of instructions that will teach the computer how to solve the problem. There are a variety of problem solving models that assist the programmer in the problem solving stage. We will look at three: flowcharting, IPO charts (input, process, output) and pseudo code.
