How to do pop art portraits

Pop art portraits

In this tutorial I will show you how to create a pop art portrait. These make great gifts because:
  • they are free
  • they look nice
  • they require almost no skill, if you follow this idiot's guide

Have you ever seen the cover for the Best of Blur CD?

It was created by an artist called Julian Opie. He has done loads of portraits like this.

I recently created a portrait in the same style. I'm not very artistic, but they turned out fairly well. Now all my family and friends want them.

If you're even slightly talented, yours will turn out better than mine.

A few more examples

Here are a few examples for you, for inspiration.

Things you can do with them

  • Give them as framed prints – maybe as a “his and hers” set.
  • Make them into greetings cards
  • Use them as a logo for your website
  • Submit them to the post office to make your own stamps
  • Let me know what you do with yours and I’ll add it to this list

How to do a pop art portrait

This guide is for real beginners. If you’re an intermediate, you probably just need to look at the pictures. If you’re a pro, you don’t need me. I bet you could do one in 3D. (In fact, that's a challenge). If you’re the artist Julian Opie, erm, hello sir.

Our ideas about BumpTop, physically-based casual interfaces and pen-centric interactions are outlined in the below CHI paper and Masters thesis.

Future Plans

  • There has been a great deal of excitement over the prototype after public demonstrations at ACM CHI 2006 and DemoCamp
  • We are actively seeking funding for development of our prototype into a full blown desktop replacement that can be installed on any Windows machine.  If you are interested in commerciliazation or licensing please contact Anand Agarawala [anand (at) honeybrown.ca].

FAQ

  • Why are there no filenames on the icons?  How does BumpTop open application windows?  You might find your answer in the FAQ [Coming Soon] .

Hockneyizer: Create a simulated collage from a single photograph

Create a unique "collage" from a single photograph. Choose one of two styles: a "joiner" style image without frames or an image created from simulated Polaroids. Every generated image is unique. This toy was inspired by the photo collages of the artist David Hockney. Works with your photos hosted on Flickr or anywhere else. Discussion and comments about this application here.
